George RR Martin has clarified why we have not yet seen the young son of the kings and what will happen to him in the next season of the HBO series.
*This article contains spoilers for the first eight chapters of The House of the Dragon
One of the best news that the last chapters of The House of the Dragonand that trigger our expectations in the face of the second season already confirmed, is how well written (and well acted) the children’s characters are. Those of Rhaenyra and, especially, those of Alicent and Viserys.
We are talking about Aegon Targaryen and that despotic, capricious, narcissistic and sexually criminal character, with a point of premature decline reminiscent of Louis XIV from the series Versailles. We are talking, of course, about Aemond Targaryen, alias El Tuerto, with his childhood obsession with riding a dragon and that adolescent arrogance full of danger and recklessness, surely close to that of his uncle Daemon. We’re also talking about Helaena Targaryen, who steals the spotlight in the few sequences she’s appeared in so far with her fascination with insects.
Well, one is missing. Viewers who have read fire and blood, George R. R. Martin’s book What is the prequel based on? Game of Thrones, they wonder why we haven’t seen the fourth son of Alicent Hightower and Viserys Targaryan yet. To the little one. His name is Daeron Targaryen.
It is striking because in the eighth chapter we do see all of Rhaenyra’s children, the three she had with Laenor Velaryon (that is to say) and the two fruit of her marriage to Daemon plus the one that is on the way. By dates of birth we should have also seen Daeron Targaryen, but for now there is no trace of him in the Red Keep.
Is it because he is an irrelevant character, just another child? No. Without wanting to go into details, because the vast majority of viewers of The House of the Dragon they have not read fire and blood nor do they want us to riddle them with spoilers, let’s just say Daeron does have a relevant role in the power struggles to come. Especially when it comes to the battlefield with dragons.
So that there are no doubts about the relevance of this character, George RR Martin himself, let us remember that he is also an executive producer of the HBO series, has clarified in his blog what about Daeron:
“Yes, Alicent bore Viserys four children, three boys and a girl. The little one, Daeron, is in Antigua. [la ciudad gobernada por la Casa Hightower]It’s just that we didn’t have time to develop it this season.”
So it’s only a matter of time before we see Daeron Targaryen in action. And, due to his location in Antigua, we can guess that he will defend the position of the Hightower in the civil war between Targaryens that is drawn on the horizon.
