Adapted from the novel first blood By David Morrell, which appeared ten years earlier, the script deals with the difficult reintegration of Vietnam War veterans into a hip and moralizing America, which forms a sharp critique of them.
The hero, John Rambo, is described here as a raging psychopath and a ruthless killer. Sylvester Stallone rewrites him in a different prism to make him a more nuanced character: a victim of the army and society.
