A friend of two victims of Jeffrey Dahmer has spoken out about the Netflix series.
Although Evan Peters has played several notable characters throughout his career and Ryan Murphy has created a good number of miniseries based on true crimes, it is likely that neither has worked on a project so brutal, commented (and above all, criticized) What ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story‘. Many have been the voices that have criticized the seriesand now a friend of a couple of Dahmer’s victims has been the latest to speak out.
The person in question is Eric Wynn, who was the only drag queen black at the 219 Club in Milwaukee around the same time that Jeffrey Dahmer committed many of his murders. Wynn told New York Times who met Eddie Smith and Anthony Hughes. He said that he noticed over the years that the number of black men entering the club was declining and said “suddenly there were fewer.” Dahmer frequented this club and between 1978 and 1991, during which time he killed 17 men, including Smith and Hughes. When asked about the choice of Netflix to produce the series, one of the most talked about this fall, and without a doubt, one of the best series of this 2022, Wynn said:
“It couldn’t be more wrong and more inopportune, it’s a media claim. I thought it was better than that.”
Many have now spoken out about the series, saying they don’t understand why this story needed to be adapted.. A sister of one of Dahmer’s victims shared that watching the series was like “reliving it all over again.” She also pointed out that the families of the victims were not asked for permission to do the project. A journalist who covered Dahmer’s story along with crew members who worked on the miniseries also voiced complaints about the show.
Eric Wynn explained that the series disappointed him in part due to the involvement of Ryan Murphy. Prior to ‘Dahmer,’ Murphy had created such productions as ‘The Normal Heart,’ based on the play by AIDS activist Larry Kramer, and ‘Pose,’ which portrays New York City life in the 1980s. portraying the LGBTQ culture in the Latino and Black communities at the time. Wynn said he liked the latter but was surprised by Murphy’s latest offer, saying, “I was so impressed because we finally had a performance that we were involved in. It was a great tribute to all of us.” And then he turns around and does this, someone who is actually attacking the black gay community.”
Wynn isn’t the only person who’s upset about how the new small-screen hit is “bashing the black gay community.” The series was listed with an LGBTQ+ tag on Netflix, but subscribers to the platform were quick to voice their issues with that tag.something that Netflix has corrected and removed that category at the end of September. In the midst of the controversy, Twitter has also criticized saying that what is being done is “exploiting the trauma” of the victims.
In the last week, Paul Ksicinski has also been heard, the former attorney of one of the victims who survived her encounter with the late killer. He explained that her client, Tracy Edwards, was forever traumatized by that encounter, a moment shown in the first episode of Dahmer.
Although Dahmer is the most watched series on Netflix since ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 was released this summer, the discourse around him has been very critical. However, that has not been an obstacle for it to enter the most watched series on Netflix.
