Sofia Coppola talks about the differences between her biopic of Priscilla and Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’

The filmmaker is preparing the biopic of the King of Rock’s wife based on the memoir ‘Elvis and me’.

Last June, Bazz Luhrmann’s new film arrived, centered on the figure of the King of Rock, ‘Elvis’.

With audiences still raving about the film, another biopic about his former wife, Priscilla Presley, written and directed by Sofia Coppola, has now been announced. Francis’ daughter will adapt his 1985 memoir ‘Elvis and Me’. The ‘Lost in translation’ director took to Instagram to give her fans a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming film, before addressing her differences with the Austin Butler-starring film.

The filmmaker drew comparisons between the previous film and her 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” starring Kristen Dunst in an interview she did for Vogue magazine. With the low-budget biopic currently in production, the ‘Virgin Suicides’ director shared that they are working to recreate Graceland and pointed out the setting’s similarities to Versailles.

The actress seen in the series ‘Mare of Easttown’, Cailee Spaeny, has been cast in the lead role, which spans 12 years between the character’s ages of 15 to 27. Next to her in the film is Jacob Elordi, seen in the series ‘Euphoria’, who will be her husband, known worldwide as the King of Rock. Although Coppola has only seen one episode of the hit series where Elordi plays the tough Nate Jacobs, he noted that he couldn’t be more different from his popular character, describing him as “sweet and humble.” Although he thought no one “would look much like Elvis,” Coppola credited Elordi’s magnetism and charisma for him accepting the role.

“I’m excited to be doing something rooted in that American style for the first time. And Priscilla is a quintessential glamor icon,” Coppola said. . She was going through all the stages of youth in such an amplified world, something akin to Marie Antoinette.”

Unlike the great musical that Luhrmann has forged, Elvis takes on a supporting role in Coppola’s film. Although some highlights of her career will be developed in the film, the high-profile couple’s relationship will come to the fore as Priscilla develops her own identity. She describes Priscilla as “the real focus” of the film..

“I loved how Baz approached her story in a very collage-like way, but I’m glad I didn’t go into much of Priscilla’s story because now I can really dig in,” Coppola said. “I think Baz is so unique and his take on that story was so creative. But Priscilla is such a minor character in it that I never felt like I was treading on the same territory. I love that people loved her movie about Elvis so much, and now, in a few years, there will be another movie about Priscilla. I think it will be interesting to have two completely different interpretations of the same events and time period.“.
