We’re at the end of Episode 8 of Rings of Power, the final chapter that closes the first season of the Prime Video series with many revelations.

Cloaked in a long black cloak, now identified as Sauron, Halbrand heads for his future kingdom in the south of Middle-earth: Mordor, whose dark valleys already extend beyond Mount Doom.

That’s when the first notes of the credits begin to sound and Fiona Apple interprets a song whose lyrics may bring back some memories. Well known to fans of The Lord of the Rings, they were already featured at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Signed by JRR Tolkien, they also appeared at the opening of the original work and were effectively a translation of the inscription (in black speech) that could be read on one of the seals after being immersed in fire.

“One ring to rule them all.
ring to find them.

One ring to bring them all
and bound them in darkness.’

When describing the final rings forged by Sauron, these few lines were preceded in the original verse (as well as in the song you hear in the credits) by other sentences describing the other 19 rings of power:

“The three rings for the elf-kings under heaven,
Seven dwarves for lords in their stone palaces,
For mortal men doomed to nine deaths,
One for the dark lord on his dark throne,
In the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.’

These few lines, even if they are an integral part of Tolkien’s text, do not appear on the surface of the unique when the latter begins to shine.
