A few days before Christmas, Matthias returned to his native, multi-ethnic village in Transylvania, Germany after leaving his job. He worries about his son, Rudi, who is growing up without him, his father, Otto, who is left alone, and wants to see Chila, his former lover, again.

He tries to become more involved in raising a boy who has been left in his mother Anna’s care for too long and wants to help him overcome his irrational anxiety. When the factory managed by Silia decides to hire foreign workers, the peace of the small community is disturbed, and the worries reach even the adults.

Disappointments, conflicts and passions reappear, breaking the appearance of peace in society.

Panic in the village

In Cannes 2016, six years after the release of Baccalauréat, Christian Mungiu returns. NMR In this political drama, a man returns to his native village in Transylvania after leaving his job in Germany. He became a stranger to many. As he tries to find his place among his family, three workers from Sri Lanka settle in a small community.

Rumors, racist clichés, violent attacks… hatred gradually erupts in the isolated village, which is still known for its peace. Christian Mungeau Paints a portrait of a man – not a great one – in all his complexity and highlights the populist discourse that creates a violent rift between the population.

One of RMN’s most striking scenes highlights this rift over a fierce debate that divides society. Christian Mungeau uses a filmed sequence to allow the audience to witness this fight, which is striking in its intensity.

As a dramatic thriller, RMN tackles the fear of others and its devastating consequences. The film does not hide its political message and the tension rises in the almost disturbing second part.

RMN, in theaters October 19.
