The School of Good and Evil on Netflix: Why It’s Not a Movie for Your Kids Unlike the Book

Looking for a movie to offer your little ones? Make your way through the school of good and evil. Despite its subject matter, it is aimed more at an older audience.

Please note that this article contains spoilers for the movie.

What we need to know

Are you looking for movies and TV shows to keep your kids busy with the All Saints holidays? The school of good and evil might be a good candidate, especially if we get used to its short description:

We follow two girls like no other, Sophie and Agatha, who share the same passion for enchanted worlds. The former dreams of escaping her dreary existence and becoming a princess, while the latter has more magic. One night, an irresistible force drives the two friends to the School of Good and Evil, where all fairy tales truly begin. Once there, nothing happens as they wished: Sophie is catapulted to the school of evil, and Agatha goes to the school of good. Only true love’s kiss can change the rules and send young girls to the schools and destinies that truly suit them.

It is an adaptation of the 2013 novel of the same name written by Soman Chainani. The first in a long and successful saga that sees our heroes fight against the evil forces of the “sons and daughters” of the fairy tale characters we know so well.

Why is the School of Good and Evil not recommended for your children?

Is your child a fan of the fantasy saga “The School of Good and Evil” and he was eagerly waiting for its adaptation on Netflix? He may be disappointed to learn that the film is available since it is not recommended for children under the age of 13 on the platform today, when the novel imagined by Soman Chainan is intended for an audience of 9 years and above. A change in tone that can be explained by Netflix’s desire to develop its own “young adult” franchise, a genre that is still a hit.

Reading the synopsis, we imagine a colorful fairy tale with princesses in beautiful dresses and wizards with their noses hanging. We are not far from it. But the film is still quite dark at times. In an early scene, Agatha is cornered by a man who threatens her with a knife.

In another nighttime scene set in a spooky forest, Sophie is attacked by predatory peons and then by a pumpkin-headed reaper. The film also revolves around fratricide… In short, it’s enough to give your children beautiful nightmares…
