Three new films in the “Star Wars” saga have recently been announced. But while projects by Taika Waititi, Patty Jenkins, Kevin Feige, Rian Johnson and JD Dillard are in development, reports indicate that a separate part of the current production is on the way.
The “secret” film will be written by Damon Lindelof of “Watchmen” and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy of “Ms. Wonder. ”Many forums have already put Lindelof into production, but only now Deadline has been able to confirm the information.
The portal also indicated that the script is already being written, but that both Lindelof and Lucasfilm wanted to find a director early in production so that their “vision of where they see this story directed was included in the script.”
And the chosen director seems to have been Obaid-Chanoy, director of two episodes of the series “Ms. Wonder. ”The Pakistani woman has already won Emmy and Oscar for her documentary work and has become the first of her in her country to make an animated film (“ 3 Bahadur ”, 2015).
Speculations on the history of the new “Star Wars”
The story that the new “Star Wars” movie will tell has yet to be revealed. Details are hidden, with reports indicating the project is one of Hollywood’s best kept secrets.
There is no expected release date for the film. Deadline added that “given (the executives) proactivity in finding a director for this film, this ‘Star Wars’ seems to have the biggest ‘push’ of any film currently in development at the studio.”
Recent work on the “Star Wars” franchise.
“Star Wars: Episode IX” was the last feature we saw on the big screen related to the world of Yoda and co. (2019). Since then, Lucasfilm has focused on series on the saga, including “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, “Boba Fett’s Book”, “Andor” and the new season of “The Mandalorian”.
A few months ago, Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron” was due to be released in December 2023, but was delayed due to her work on several other films, including “Wonder Woman 3” and some creative differences with the studio on the movie.
Taika Waititi’s film was supposed to replace Jenkins’ project, although, speaking to Total Film, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy was stern about when to expect the film: “We haven’t closed anything,” she said.
Waititi himself was more open when he spoke about the film earlier this year: “I’d like to take something new and create new characters,” he said. However, it is currently unclear whether the Lindelof and Obaid-Chinoy film will be the next “Star Wars” film.
