The last scene of ‘House of the Dragon’ was improvised by Matt Smith

Just when we thought the episode that closed the second season was over, we see Daemon tell Rhaenyra about the tragedy. Only this wasn’t written in the script.

The last chapter of‘The House of the Dragon’ It has been simply spectacular, the script twist that the plot needed so that the succession war had a compelling reason to start spilling blood in season 2 (‘spoilers’ from this moment).

When Rhaenyra was contemplating accepting Alicent’s proposal to give up her crown to hold the kingdom together, as requested by Viserys through the Song of Fire and Ice, her son Lucerys meets Aemond, his uncle and Aegon’s brother. Of course, they have a confrontation in Storm’s End, which just when it seems to be over… it has a fatal outcome. In a clear example that dragons cannot be slaves to men, Aemond loses control of Vhagar and he tears Luke and his dragon Arrax to pieces with his teeth.

Moments later, we see how the already confirmed non-villain Daemon approaches Rhaenyra to tell her what happened, while she turns her face into a mixture of pain and rage, in which we can clearly see that: the dance of dragons has begun.

Well, it turns out this last sequence was the result of improvisation, an idea specifically of Matt Smith. The actor who plays Daemon told the crew why he wasn’t the one to break the news to Emma D’Arcy…and ended up being a stunner.

”It has to be known. When we were on set rehearsing, it was a twist of genius that came out of Matt Smith. He gave the idea that Daemon should break the news to Rhaenyra, as they walked away from the camera towards the fire, “the leading actress herself told GQ, thus praising her co-star.

They have also revealed that it took up to a whole day to shoot this scene, since he wanted the camera rotation and focus games to be perfect. Although apparently, the cast had it finished with three or four take.
