The singer Gal Costa, big name in Brazilian popular music (MPB), died this Wednesday morning (9), at the age of 77. A film about the singer starring Sophie Charlotte, titled “My Name is Gal”, will be released in 2023.
The artist’s death was confirmed by Folha de S. Paolo, who revealed that the information was confirmed by Gal Costa’s press office. The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Gal was slated to be one of the highlights of the Primavera Sound festival, which had an edition in Sao Paulo last weekend. However, the singer’s participation was canceled, according to Gal Costa’s team, because she was recovering from the removal of a lump in her right nasal cavity.
This would keep her off stage at least until the end of November, following the doctors’ recommendations. Gal Costa’s last performance was at another music festival that took place in São Paulo, Coala, shortly before the singer’s surgery in September.
“My name is Gal”, a film about the singer who is one of the biggest names in Brazilian music, will not be a biopic and will have Sophie Charlotte in the role of the artist. “It is a great privilege to play Gal in a film. I feel like I’m living a real dream, ”the actress said in a statement earlier this year.
The film is directed by Dandara Ferreira and Lô Politi, who also wrote the screenplay. The cast includes names like Rodrigo Lelis (Caetano Veloso), Dan Ferreira (Gilberto Gil), Camila Márdila (Dedé Gadelha), George Sauma (Waly Salomão), Luis Lobianco (businessman Guilherme Araújo), among others. Dandara Ferreira also acts, playing Maria Bethânia, and Fábio Assunção makes a cameo as a television director.
