Will Smith’s path to Oscar redemption begins with nice gestures from the actor with his companions during the filming of ‘To Freedom’.
Will Smith’s redemption is already underwayand proof of this is the news about his kind acts that have begun to emerge before the premiere of ‘Towards freedom’, the new film by the brilliant Antoine Fuqua.
“He was nice to everyone on set.“, points out the director himself in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Will was running around and hugging and shaking hands with everyone. We had about 300 extras and military and marines. We had to stop Will from doing that because of COVID.”
“It is funny, we had certain extras that were the corpses in the graves and he was going to give them money for lying there in that heat of more than 38 degrees“, he points out before touching the subject in which we are all thinking. “I saw a different person from that moment.”
Recall that, at the recent Oscars, Chris Rock appeared on stage to present an award and, spotting Jada Pinkett Smith, joked: “Jada, I can’t wait to see ‘Lieutenant O’Neil 2’.” At first, Will was seen to laugh and his wife to pout. The camera returned to Rock, and then Smith came up on stage, slapped the comedian, and returned to his seat. “Get my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” he yelled from his seat on two occasions. “Man, it was just a ‘Lieutenant O’Neil’ joke,” replied a stunned Rock who, as he could, continued his segment of the ceremony.
Shortly after, Smith won the Oscar, gave one of the most embarrassing speeches in living memory and, the next day, the Academy decided to ban him from the awards for the next ten years.
“I have nothing but amazing things to say about Will Smith, truly“, points fuqua. “You can ask anyone who’s worked on the movie, they’ll tell you the same thing. She’s the nicest person I’ve ever met.”
We don’t know if ‘Towards Freedom’ will manage to become one of Will Smith’s best films, but to begin to calm the controversy after the slap, on Apple TV + they have bet heavily on redemption.
‘To Freedom’, written by Bill Collage (‘The Divergent Series: Loyal’, ‘Assassin’s Creed’), has been directed by Antoine Fuqua, the genius who conquered us in video stores thanks to ‘Replacement Assassins’ (1998) and who has been able to give us the odd gem like ‘Training Day’ (2001), ‘The Equalizer 2’ (2018).
Although it is planned to reach North American theaters on December 2, ‘to freedom’ will premiere worldwide on Apple TV+ on December 9, 2022.
