‘Goncharov’: discover ‘Martin Scorsese’s lost film’

Users of the social network Tumblr have shown an obsession with the “film” “Goncharov”, a 1973 release by Martin Scorsese, a work forgotten by time. It turns out that “movie” isn’t in quotes for no reason. After all, if you have never heard of “Goncharov”, the feature film by Scorsese with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, it is because it simply does not exist.

The story of “Goncharov” involves Tumblr users who went too far with an inside joke, creating a poster for the 1973 film, a storyline, and numerous shares that make it look like the film actually exists. Those involved seem so enthusiastic about the film that it seems as if it actually exists.

So “Goncharov” is a fictional Scorsese film that Tumblr users, story created by Tumblr users, generate a huge internal joke network around it. It all started with a label announcing “The Greatest Mafia Movie Ever Made. Martin Scorsese presents Goncharov” in a pair of counterfeit boots from a Tumblr user, who complained that he received the product with a non-existent film label.

The original post is actually very old, but it inexplicably started gaining momentum this past weekend. User Beelzeebub created a poster for the “movie” listing some key characters and actors – specifically actors Scorsese worked with in previous films – and a vague set. From there, everyone decided to play together in a kind of giant online cinematic RPG.

According to the description by Tumblr user thefiresontheheight, ‘Goncharov’ is one of Martin Scorsese’s early films, although it was never officially released and ended up being snubbed at the awards, becoming a work of lost media. The film would be based on an unknown trilogy, according to the user in thefallofasparrow.

But what would be the plot of “Goncharov”? Again, people let their imaginations fly. The film would tell the story of Goncharov, a former nightclub owner who arrives in Naples, Italy after the fall of the Soviet Union and gets involved in the world of organized crime. He ends up crossing paths with Andrey, a banker, and the two have a lot of sexual tension with each other. Meanwhile, his estranged wife, Katya, must deal with her father’s death as she becomes involved with a mysterious woman named Sofia.

The film’s plot is constantly evolving, acquiring new elements, with some fans even coming up with ways to compile everything. With this giant inside joke going on on Tumblr, more and more people are getting involved, creating posts with fake scenes from the movie, just like they would with real movies or series.

There are lengthy analyzes of scenes that never existed and of fictional characters. There are also collections of images, fan art of characters from the film (like the one seen above), memes about the film, and even reviews. A soundtrack was also composed for the film.

Iconic actress Lynda Carter also joined in on the fun. “I’ve been offered a role in Goncharov, but I’m too busy on Tumblr to do it,” the actress said on her Tumblr account, later joking that she announced the film’s “remake” too early by mistake. When she was asked if she had seen the film, she the actress said she went to the premiere.

To watch “Goncharov” (1973), join the fun and imagine what this old film by Martin Scorsese would be like. Unfortunately, the movie isn’t available on any streaming platform (or anywhere else).
