Argentina take the field this Saturday, against Mexico, they need to win to keep alive the possibility of qualifying for the round of 16 world Cup from Qatar. For Hristo Stoichkov, a former historic player of Bulgaria, the leader of this selection, Lionel Messi, “deserves a World Cup”.
“Messi deserves the World Cup for everything he’s done in football, but it’s not just up to him. There are other teams,” the former Barcelona player began.
“If Argentina recovers from the hard blow suffered against Arabia (Saudi Arabia, in the first round), they can do it. There are two games left and if the team returns to playing as in previous games, especially against Italy (in Finalíssima, in June), has a lot to say,” he added.
Stoichkov attended the tribute held by CONMEBOL in Doha to Diego Maradona last Friday, on the day of the two years since the death of the legendary Argentine player.
“Messi is fantastic, there’s no doubt about it. Being criticized is nothing new. I’ve been criticized for 20 years. I’ve seen it all my life,” he concluded.
Messi and company were beaten 2-1 by Saudi Arabia in their Qatar Cup debut. That’s why they need a win against the Mexicans this afternoon to get into group C. Currently, Argentina are bottom of the group.
