The director of ‘Doctor Sleep’ reveals how he convinced Stephen King to do the adaptation

“King really didn’t like the Kubrick movie.”

The director of ‘Doctor Sleep’, Mike Flanagan, has revealed how he convinced Stephen King to approve his sequel to the horror movie ‘The glow’starring Ewan McGregor.

The author disliked Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film, saying it was a “bad adaptation” of his novel. The Flanagan Sequelitself based on King’s 2013 novel, evoked much of the imagery of its predecessor, a decision that was initially left the author nervous.

In a post on tumblr, Flanagan revealed that his biggest problem with the book was his decision to burn down the Overlook Hotel.a scenario that the director wanted to reintroduce in the film.

“I put together a proposal outlining what I wanted to do: use Kubrick’s visual language and keep the Overlook standing as the scene of the final battle,” Flanagan wrote. “The initial answer we got was ‘no’.”

Despite being one of the best movies ever, one of the biggest curiosities of ‘The Shining’ has to do with this very negative response, says Flanagan: “King really didn’t like the Kubrick movie, and his priority was to adapt ‘Doctor Sleep,’ not revisit ‘The Shining.

Directorwho also directed two of Netflix’s best scary and horror series, ‘Midnight Mass’ and ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, revealed that drew a scene to try to convince King of the project.

“As a last ditch effort, I said ‘imagine the Overlook, decrepit and rotten, and imagine Danny Torrance having to go inside to wake it up, lights on above his head as he walks the halls.”

“He finds his way to the family bar, where an empty glass awaits. And we see a familiar bartender ready to serve him, saying ‘Good evening, Mr. Torrance.’ What if that bartender is his father?”

Flanagan later revealed that he finally got the green light after a short delay, and that the author limited himself to responding “do it” to his proposal and, in King’s eyes, Flanagan fixed Kubrick’s wreck with ‘The Shining’.

The director’s next project will be Netflix’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s tale.
