The premiere of ‘Strange World’ on the big screen has not brought the public to theaters, a failure at Disney that could aggravate the crisis before the platforms.
The Disney brand animation blankets were in luck but, it seems, they have not responded as expected by the brand and ‘Strange World’, his latest film, has become a box office flop. Will he be able to come back when he arrives at Disney +?
Christmas has been delayed at Walt Disney Animation Studios which, already down, they expected the film to hit $30-40 million between Wednesday and Sunday. Even Thanksgiving has not prevented disaster and, opening in 4,174 US theaters, has raised 18.6 million after the five days of vacation.
“Usually this time of year a Disney family movie is the big draw,” says Paul Dergarabedian, principal analyst at Comscore. “It shows that we are still recovering and adapting to the limitations of the pandemic“.
‘Strange World’ is already among the worst Disney opening weekends in modern timesslightly ahead of the 10.5 million of ‘West Side Story’ (Steven Spielberg, 2021) but behind other small disappointments such as the 27.2 million of ‘Charm’ (Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Charise Castro Smith, 2021)
and the 51 million ‘Lightyear’ (Angus MacLane, 2022).
“This is a weak opening by Disney animation standards,” says David A. Gross, who runs film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “At a cost of $180 million, plus marketing expenses, the film will end up in the red, even with good side income“.
“It is once again a prodigy in terms of space design and animation, where you notice the influences of many illustrators that filled the covers of old pulp magazines or cartoonists who imagined places beyond imagination in cartoons of comics (Druillet, Bilal, Moebius…) and in examples of already classic cartoons ranging from the Europeans of the great René Leloux ( ‘The masters of time’, ‘The blue planet’, ‘Gandahar, the light years’…) to Chuck Jones who reinterpreted the illustrations of Dr. Seuss”, indicates Fausto Fernández in our review of ‘Strange world’. “He achieves with You grow to recreate that new lost world so dear to the adventure literature of a lifetime, and that utopian Avalonia is also successful, from where the expedition that will be the central expedition of the film departs. An Avalonia that is still the home of the eloi and the morlocks, absent here as is everything that could disturb, more than the viewer, who tweets or leaves comments on social networks”.
The mouse house, in addition to filling the billboard with galactic superheroes and cowboys, is still willing to give us the best anime. From ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ (David Hand, 1937) to this new ‘Strange World’, 62 titles are part of this list of Disney classics ordered chronologically, will it end up being one of the most underrated Disney movies in its history?
