In their victory over the Australians, Lionel Scaloni’s side opened up a 2-0 lead, with the opening goal scored by Messi, but it leaked in the latter stretch of the second half.
On the counterattack, Lautaro MartÃnez squandered two clear chances, after coming close to the star, and failed to extend the lead. Finally came Australia’s goal, who were unable to seek an equaliser.
Lionel Messi’s Argentina is back on the field on Friday, at 4pm (Brasilia time), to face the Netherlands, who beat the United States 3-1. The quarter-final will be played at the Lusail Stadium.
