Brazil had no difficulty confirming their trip to the quarter-finals of the World Cup. This Monday, the national team faced South Korea, at the Estádio 974, in Doha, Qatar, for the round of 16 of the competition, a match which marked the return of Neymar to the field, confirming his favoritism by beating his Asian rival by 4 to 1, thanks to goals from Vinícius Jr, Neymar, from the penalty spot, Richarlison and Lucas Paquetá. Paik scored the honorable goal for the Koreans.
With the result, Brazil will face Croatia in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, next Friday, at 12 (Brasilia time), at the Estádio Cidade da Educação, in Doha. The Europeans also secured passage to the next round on Monday by beating Japan 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
This Monday’s match marked not only Neymar’s return to the first team, but also Danilo’s. The forward and full-back suffered ankle injuries exactly 11 days ago, on their World Cup debut against Serbia, but managed to recover in time to play in the round of 16 of the tournament.
The game
Brazil dominated the first half and needed just seven minutes to open the scoring. Raphinha made a good move down the right, reached the backline and made the low cross back. The ball went through everyone and it was off to Vinícius Jr, who had all the tranquility in the world to dominate, lift his head and hit with category to score his first goal in the Cup.
Five minutes later Brazil extends. Richarlison beat the Korean defender to the ball and was brought down inside the box. Without hesitating, the referee scored a penalty. Neymar went to the penalty spot and didn’t waste it, categorically moving the goalkeeper to put the team even more at ease in the match.
Trying to fight back, South Korea got scared in the 16th minute with Heechan Hwang, who struck from outside the area, asking Alisson for a great defense. But it was Brazil that rocked the net. At 29 Richarlison received a beautiful pass from Thiago Silva, he came face to face with the goalkeeper and touched the corner to score the third goal of the match.
As if that weren’t enough, the Brazilian side even turned their elastic victory into a defeat before the break. Richarlison started the counterattack, the ball was dropped to Vinícius Jr on the right and the striker made an excellent pass for the elevation, finding Lucas Paquetá, who came on with his first strike to fill the net and close any chance of South Korea’s reaction.
Second time
Brazil “got their foot off” in the second half and almost conceded the opener two minutes into the game, when Son received a shot from Marquinhos’ back, kept control of the ball inside the area and it hit the corner, but it sent him out near the beam.
The Brazilian team, in turn, responded with Raphinha, who on the counterattack with Paquetá, dribbled the marker inside the area and hit the corner, asking for a great defense from the South Korean goalkeeper, who also stopped the number 11 from the Brazil on some other occasions to avoid the opponent’s fifth goal.
Taking advantage of the fact that Brazil were more relaxed in the game, South Korea were determined to score at least their honor goal, which they nearly did in the 23rd minute, when Heechan Hwang grabbed the crossbar and, from inside the area, he dropped a bomb, in the corner, but Alisson made a great defense.
But, with much persistence, South Korea ended up being rewarded with the honor goal in the 30th minute, when Paik got the rebound after the ball had been lifted in the area and hit hard, counting on Thiago Silva’s deflection to bag goalkeeper Alisson’s goals.
