Quentin Tarantino’s Anti-Marvel comments continue to generate reactions from Marvel Studios actors, and now it’s the turn of Robert Downey Jr., who lived Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In an interview with the 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast, the director said he believes it’s the characters in superhero movies, not the actors, who are the real movie stars, and criticized the “wonderiness” of Hollywood. “You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they are not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star,” Tarantino said.
Now, in an interview with Deadline, Robert Downey Jr. has been asked about Tarantino’s comments. “I think our views on these topics say a lot about us,” he said. “I think we are in a time and place that I have unknowingly contributed to, where intellectual property takes precedence over principles and personality. But it’s a double-edged sword,” he said.
“Intellectual property is only as good as the human talent that can represent it, and you can have great intellectual property, even if it comes from an author or a national treasure from a writer-director, and if you don’t have the right some kind of artist who plays that role, you’ll never know how good it could have been. I think creatively it’s a waste of time to be at war with ourselves,” continued Robert Downey Jr.
“I’d just say, before you throw insults at each other, go through your rebirth and see if that doesn’t change your mind a little bit,” he added. “Reinvent yourself before you decide that someone else doesn’t know what they are doing, or that something is preventing you from doing your best, or that one thing is better than another.”
The actor added that he believes there’s enough room in Hollywood for everything. For example, he said he feels gratitude for blockbusters like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Avatar: The Path of Water’ because they make room for movies like ‘Armageddon Time’.
Additionally, the ‘Iron Man’ star also said he just had an ‘exceptionally transformative’ experience working with Christopher Nolan on ‘Oppenheimer. She claims to be inspired by all kinds of different projects going on.
