The last great cinematographic event of the year will also arrive in our living rooms… although it may take a while.
We are already waiting for the Disney+ release date of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water, one of the great phenomena of 2022. And it is what a context: sequel ‘Avatar’ (2009), the highest-grossing film in history with almost 3,000 million dollars worldwide, with the leadership of James Cameron, the self-styled “king of the world”, and the production of a sequel that has lasted a whopping 12 years. There are many factors that make ‘Avatar 2‘ be, more than a movie, an event.
The last quarter of 2022 is very special for fans of the future franchise. On the one hand, ‘Avatar’ returned to theaters in September with a new 3D remastered version and with new scenes from ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’. The result 13 years after its theatrical release? Box office leader. Which clearly answers the question posed by what is behind the current rerun fever. Also, on December 16 we will finally be able to witness, and after 13 years of waiting, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’, the sequel directed by Cameron and which will once again feature Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Lang and CCH Pounder, who will be joined by Kate Winslet (finally repeating with her director after ‘Titanic’), Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin and Cliff Curtis, among others.
Its director has taken advantage of this decade of waiting between ‘Avatar’ (for many, one of the best films in cinema history) and its sequel to place the story ten years after the original, enough time to see how the Sully family, that is to say, Jake, Neytiri and their children, live from day to day, with their problems, battles and tragedies. And now we are waiting for ‘Avatar 3’ (and the others), which are already on the horizon of the franchise.
‘Avatar 2’: Release date on Disney +
If we have been able to learn anything over the years, it is that few directors manage to prevail over the wishes of the studios. There’s an old saying in Hollywood that goes “never bet against James Cameron”. Therefore, and despite the fact that we are talking about Disney +, the film will be released when Cameron considers that its run in theaters has concluded. ‘Avatar 2’ is not just any premiere, and James Cameron is not “an ordinary director” either. Cameron’s ambition is to surpass the box office of his predecessor and be able to crown himself again as the creator of the greatest opening of all time. If there’s anyone who can beat Cameron’s ambition, ego and numbers, it’s… himself.
So don’t expect this premiere to follow the “45-day” rule, it won’t even happen 60 days after it hit the theaters. This is not going to happen. We can forget about strategies in movies like ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ or ‘Doctor Strange 2’, Marvel’s most surreal sequel. The key lies in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, Tom Cruise’s blockbuster that has surpassed Marvel and has been on the bill for more than 12 weeks, in addition to taking five months to come out in physical format. The strategy is to feed the theaters with great releases and get all the box office performance, especially when you have a product with an estimated budget of more than 250 million dollars and you decide to set its release on a date as marked as Christmas.
It’s too soon to know when ‘Avatar 2’ will be released on Disney+, but we bet it will be closer to six months from its theatrical release.. We will see it in the living room of our houses, yes, but not in the short term.
