Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has promised not to back down
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Monday that her government would soon introduce new rules to prevent the unauthorized arrival of forced migrants.
The migration crisis in the Mediterranean has been one of the main topics on the agenda since the far-right leader took office in late October, and has already been the cause of clashes with France over the fate of people rescued by humanitarian ships.
“At the national level, starting next week we will be working on new rules to stop trafficking [de pessoas]🇧🇷 We don’t intend to back down,” Meloni said in a video on Facebook.
“Our position remains the same: you cannot enter Italy illegally. We do not want to favor human traffickers in any way,” he added.
The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, speaking at a ministerial meeting in Brussels, declared that Rome is working to ensure that the migration crisis is “tackled in the short, medium and long term”.
“We want to create investment initiatives in Africa to stimulate growth, this is the only way to fight immigration,” he stressed.
Since the beginning of the year, Italy has received around 97,200 forced migrants across the Mediterranean, a 54% increase over the same period a year earlier, according to the Interior Ministry.
The Meloni government has tried to prevent NGO ships from docking in the country with migrants rescued at sea, such as the Ocean Viking, of SOS Méditerranée, forced to set sail for France after Rome’s refusal.
Last week, however, two humanitarian ships were able to dock in Italian ports with more than 500 people on board. 🇧🇷
