The attacks in Brasilia are another step in the process of radicalization of the Brazilian extreme right
What effect did the extremist acts of December 12 have on future of Bolsonarismo🇧🇷 To answer this question, it must be remembered that this is not an isolated event, nor did it start after the presidential election result. The acts that took place in Brasilia are yet another stage in the process of radicalization of the Brazilian far right.
Over the past two years, the Bolsonarists have carried out constant and coordinated insurgency mobilization exercises. The milestone of this process occurred in March 2020, when Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters began to attack the governors and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), with acts that have been described as “anti-democratic demonstrations”. In the last two years, the motociatas have been the exercise of insurrectionary mobilisations.
With this turn towards radicalization, Bolsonarism has left behind the agenda that elected it. In 2018, the Bolsonarista campaign focused on the figure of the “good citizen”, mobilized above all by the anti-corruption discourse. Since 2020, Bolsonarism has begun to recruit the “patriot”, the more radical and violent version of the “good citizen”.
This change has occurred in line with a global trend of the far right, whose mode of action involves the use of domestic terrorism strategies, such as the invasion of the Capitol in the United States, after the defeat of Donald Trump.
With the growing appeal to the participation of protesters considered “patriots”, those considered “weak” are losing importance, relevance and prestige within Bolsonarist movements and groups. On the other hand, only those most proficient with the use of force and violence, both rhetorical and physical, gain prominence. And the leaders of these acts become more prestigious every time they advance their “strategic extremism” against democratic institutions.
These acts seek to instigate chaos as a method. It is a way of generating increasingly extreme situations in which the leaders of these movements are investigated, arrested or become “victims” of the “system” (the target of arrests and investigations in the Supreme Court). With this, Bolsonarismo, while starting to mobilize an ever smaller number of supporters, is also advancing in its process of radicalization.
