Progressive nature of heart failure as a disease may make patients sensitive to temperature effects in extreme climates, study finds
A study published in the scientific journal Circulation (sponsored by the American Heart Association) has highlighted a possible link between extreme weather conditions and heart failure. It turns out that, over 40 years, the number of cardiovascular deaths has been markedly elevated on days with warmer or colder temperatures.
- Climate change could lead to the planet’s sixth mass extinction
- Human activities could throw Earth’s climate into complete chaos, says the study
The analysis recorded more than 32 million cardiovascular deaths during this period. Among patients with certain cardiovascular diseases, those with heart failure had the most deaths from extreme temperatures.
With this, scientists raise awareness of the need to develop strategies to reduce the impact of extreme temperatures on cardiovascular disease. However, to better understand this relationship and what can be done about it, the team still needs to fully investigate the topic through future research.
The researchers analyzed information from a consortium of experts studying the impacts of climate on health and environmental stressors related to death rates, called the Multi-Country Multi-City (MCC) Collaborative Research Network.

“One in 100 cardiovascular deaths can be attributed to days of extreme temperatures, and temperature effects were most pronounced when looking at heart failure deaths,” say the study authors.
One reason raised by the researchers is the progressive nature of heart failure as a disease, which can make patients sensitive to temperature effects. The team calls for professional cardiology organizations to provide insight into the relationship between temperature extremes and cardiovascular health.
