Critical, ironic and precise, the journalist Carlinhos says goodbye to the newsrooms
After three months in the Sírio-Libanês hospital, in São Paulo, where he tried to recover from various health problems, he died this Saturday aged 17, at the age of 78, from multiple organ failure, the journalist Carlo Ernani Brickmann🇧🇷 Recognized and admired figure as a journalist, editor, director – and, everywhere, as a collector of friends – Carlinhos, as he was known by all, leaves behind his wife Berta and children Rafael and Esther. He stopped breathing around 5:30 pm, in an intensive care unit in Sírio-Libanês. The vigil will take place this Sunday at 11:30 and the burial at 13:00 at the Cemitério Israelita do Butantã.
Carlinhos also leaves the news site fat leadwhich he created in 2015 and where he worked until recently, as a political analyst, alongside Marli Goncalves🇧🇷 On this site, Carlinhos showed until the end, with the same energy as always, his critical spirit, his gigantic memory for big and small things, his irony, his competent investigation and, practically at all times , his good mood.
Brazil was still chaired by João Goulartin 1963, when Brickmann started his career, a Folha de S. Paulo – he was the youngest editor of the Internacional, called “Undersecretary of the World” at the time, in an editorial team headed by Lana Guimaraes🇧🇷 In 1966, after short periods at the San Paolo branch of Brazil newspaper and from the sports edition of Stadiumwas composed, under the command of letter minthe first team of afternoon newspaper, which revolutionized the Brazilian press at the time – by content, form, scoop, awards. Among these, the Esso awards in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1974, in which the then young publisher participated directly.
In the six decades he spent immersed in Brazilian political and economic life, Carlinhos alternated between journalist, editor and director in various newsrooms, such as those of Afternoon sheet🇧🇷 Bloch publishing house🇧🇷 View And Bandeirantes TV, in which he directed broadcast journalism and won an award from the Association of Art Critics of São Paulo, APCA. In 1993 he opened his own firm, Brickmann & Associados, through which he has acted as an advisor to politicians such as Paul Malufin his campaign for the Presidency of the Republic, e Nion Albernaz to the town hall of Goiânia, as well as directing the social communication of the former Vasp. At the time, his column, BBNews, was being published by 40 newspapers across the country.
Having worked alongside him for the past three decades – the last seven years in Chumbo Gordo – journalist Marli Gonçalves says Brickmann “should always be remembered as a defender of press freedom and democratic thought”. He was, she adds, “an everlasting gentle giant who combined intelligence with humor, precision, and a uniquely relentless memory.” Editor Mario Marinho, who worked with him on JT and Chumbo Gordo, sums it up like this: “He knew how to be a partner, a boss, a friend. With competence and good humor, he knew how to live life and make us live life. Huge, the size of him”.
Another friend all this time, journalist and executive Miguel Jorge, former editor-in-chief of Stadium and former Minister of Industry and Commerce during the second government of Lula da Silva, had in Carlinhos “a great friend, at all times and at all times”. According to Miguel, Carlinhos “had a heart as big as the world and helped everyone, especially the seals. We will miss his verve, his ironies and everything that made him a great friend, a great character and an outstanding journalist”.
“Talented and creative, the restless Carlinhos was a quality reference in the newsroom. This is the memory I keep and will keep of the friend and journalism colleague we lost in Band – who worked with him, in the afternoon newspaper🇧🇷
A decades-long companion of Brickmann’s newsrooms, and now based in Barcelona, Spain, journalist Ricardo Setti calls him “possessor of an anthology-worthy intelligence and sense of humor, and one of the most honest and supportive people who have ever met”. And he adds: “Seleções magazine had a section titled ‘My Unforgettable Guy’. Well, Carlinhos was many people’s Unforgettable Guy. His boundless energy makes it hard to believe he’s gone. He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of those who had the honor of being your friend.”
