Filho da Mãe is a beautiful and sincere documentary about the actor and comedian Paulo Gustavo, a victim of the covid-19
Actor and comedian Paulo Gustavo has been captivating fans since he debuted on television in his weekly show 220 volts, shown on the Multishow channel. Before that, however, she already had a career in theater where she attracted the laughter of the audience playing Dona Hermínia, a caricatured character inspired by her mother, Dea Lúcia.
With his untimely death from complications from covid-19, Paulo left his mother, relatives and a legion of fans orphaned of his humor and joie de vivre. Come to think of it, the First video launched, in 2022, Son of a bitcha one-and-a-half hour documentary that provides a beautiful and simple portrait of the actor’s life.
Director and one of Paulo Gustavo’s best friends, Susana Garcia manages to delicately mix the testimonies of friends and family with the actor’s scenes, without making the documentary morbid or falling into sentimentality.
The work focuses on the backstage of the homonymous tour that took place in 2019 and was Paulo’s tribute to his mother. On stage, he and Dea Lúcia share the stage and exchange jokes and jokes that amuse the viewer. Furthermore, we know another side of the Fluminense born in Niterói: the singer. The two enjoy singing songs that were MPB and Pop hits.
an ode to friendship
One of the highlights of Son of a bitchthey are the testimonies of people who were important in Paulo’s life. Among them, the actor and comedian Marcus Majella, Pedro Bial, Regina Casé and Mônica Martelli, one of the greatest supporters of the actor’s work.
Monica’s speech was recorded on the same beach where they both shot the movie My Life on Marsand this little detail made the scene even more touching and tender.
Together, all relationships build a story of friendship, sincerity, love and trust. It is clear that Paulo was important in the life of his friends and vice versa. His main characteristic was his authenticity and the courage to be himself, even in a world where being homosexual is a reason for prejudice, violence and death.
The love of Thales Bretas
Still speaking of testimonials, the highlight of the production is certainly the speech of Thales Bretas (the actor’s husband) on their marriage and on the saga lived to generate two children. It’s exciting to see how both were connected and united by one purpose: to be parents.
Susana is once again right by showing unseen behind-the-scenes footage of the comedian’s early days with her children. They are sensitive scenes that portray all the tenderness Paulo had with the children and bring the viewer a sense of welcome.
the backstage scenes
Of course, the backstage scenes are also full of jokes and jokes, which make those watching the production laugh. But they offer something else: the serious and professional side of Paulo.
Sometimes we see him stressed by the technical details of the tour and show rehearsals. But his sulky face soon turns into a smile, proving that professionalism and a bad mood don’t always have to go hand in hand.
The origin of everything: Déa Lúcia
All this well-constructed narrative of Son of a bitch it is anchored to the key part of Paulo’s life: his mother, Dona Dea Lúcia. As authentic as his son, she doesn’t lose the joy of living even when he talks about her death, one of the saddest moments in his life.
It is she who shares the protagonism of the documentary with the comedian, and it is also the reason why all this exists. Her intervention is the most important and stands out for all 110 minutes of screen. Positive point for the management, who knew how to get the best out of Dona Déa without disrespecting her pain or falling into cheap sentimentality.
From laughter to crying
Much of the documentary focuses on Paulo’s life, leaving the audience with a pleasant feeling of nostalgia. In the last half hour, however, the production begins to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, which began in 2020, and the actor’s fear of being contaminated.
To tell this story, Susana uses the videos she posted on her social networks expressing her desire to get the vaccine and her fear of being infected with the virus.
From that moment on, the public already knows what will happen: Paulo will be infected, go to the hospital and die on May 4, 2021, leaving two children, a husband, a sister, a mother and several desolate fans.
As much as the joy of the documentary has passed, from then on it is possible to feel only sadness and pity. The work gets back on track by making public the generosity that the comedian has had with the professionals who worked in cinemas and theaters – closed due to the lockdown.
Paulo was a friend, sincere and honest, and all of this was very well put on the screen. Susana gets the tone and timing just right, without stretching the superfluous or shortening the essential. Son of a bitch, is that work that remains to posterity as a hug for the actor’s fans. The film shows what we already know: Paulo Gustavo will be eternal!
