This Tuesday, São Paulo launched the book “1992 – the eternal year”, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of its first Libertadores and World Cup titles. The event, held at the Morumbi stadium, was attended by some of the club’s idols, including goalkeeper Zetti and that team’s number 10, Raí.

In all, nine former athletes who were part of the squad commanded by coach Telê Santana were present at the event to deliver autographs to the São Paulo fans who bought the book. In addition to Zetti and Raí, Macedo, Altair Ramos, Mauricinho, Sérgio Baresi, Nelsinho, Marcos Bonequini and Vitor took part in the meeting of the tricolor world champions.

The year 1992 was one of the most successful in the history of São Paulo. The team, which had already won the Brazilian title the previous year, became Libertadores champions for the first time, on penalties, in the final against Newell’s Old Boys, from Argentina. Months later, against Johan Cruyff’s powerful Barcelona, in Tokyo, Japan, Tricolor won the World Cup by beating their rivals 2-1, in a comeback, with a brace from Raí. Furthermore, that team commanded by Telê Santana still won the Paulista Championship against Palmeiras.

“Coming back here after 30 years, the memories are great, even seeing friends. Remembering the stories of 1992. 1992 marked not only the history of São Paulo, but the history of Brazilian football in the Libertadores. It completely changed the way which we think about the Libertadores, playing Libertadores. If I knew that in 30 years we would have a party, I would certainly write everything so as not to forget the stories. Time passes and some stories are forgotten”, commented Zetti, hero of the Libertadores title in 1992 parrying the penalty kick by Gamboa.

The year 1992 also saw further trophies picked up by São Paulo on a tour of Europe. In Spain, the team commanded by Telê Santana beat Barcelona, 4 to 1, Real Madrid, 4 to 0, as well as the victory over Espanyol, 2 to 1, securing the titles of the Troféu Teresa Herrera, Trofeo Ramón de Carranza and City of Barcelona Trophy. Nobody managed to stop that tricolor squadron.

“What we have achieved represents what the Brazilians have always liked, i.e. well-played, artificial and effective football, winning everything and winning with fairness, imposing themselves not only in the Libertadores, but also in the World Cup against Cruyff’s Barcelona, who represented , compared to today, a team considered one of the best in Europe, they were surprised by the capacity, with everything that São Paulo has built in a few years and they have managed to demonstrate on the field with great fairness” added Raí.
