the new movie Avatar: The Way of Water it caused equipment damage in some Japanese cinemas, which experienced technical difficulties during the film’s opening weekend screening in the country.
According to Bloomberg, Japanese audiences who went to see the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 film took to social media to report abrupt cancellations and employee apologies for machine trouble and issuing refunds. At least one cinema lowered the film’s frame rate by half in order to show it.
One of the most expensive productions in the history of cinema, Avatar: The Way of Water, like its predecessor, is known for using a lot of technological resources, standing out for its technical aspects. These features include a high frame rate 3D format, which requires too much information to process quickly. This has apparently clashed with outdated equipment in some Japanese cinemas.
According to Bloomberg, some of the theater chains cited include United Cinema Co., Toho Col and Tokyu Corp. Neither network has commented on the issue, however, as has Disney itself, which owns 20th Century Studios, which distributes the film.
While the specific cause of the technical problems remains unclear, a cinema in Nagoya was able to project by reducing the specified 48 frames per second to the traditional cinematic 24 fps.
Not all theaters support 48 fps HFR (High Frame Rate) viewing. This type of display requires newer projectors or upgraded older projectors and is rarely used.
Avatar: The Way of Water it is available in several formats, including 2D at 48 fps, 3D at 48 fps and the normal format at 24 fps. The 48fps versions only use this high frame rate in action sequences, while slower cutscenes and dialogue are reduced to 24fps.
These challenges come at the worst time for James Cameron’s film, which fell short of some estimates with its opening weekend box office.
Avatars 2 is showing in cinemas.
