Russia is ready to negotiate with all parties involved in the war in Ukraine, but Kiev and its Western backers have refused to get involved in negotiations, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview broadcast on Sunday.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24 triggered Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II and the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.
There is still no end in sight to the war.
The Kremlin says it will fight until all of its goals are achieved, while Kiev says it won’t rest until all Russian soldiers are expelled from all of its territory, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.
“We are ready to negotiate with all concerned on acceptable solutions, but it depends on them – it’s not us who refuse to negotiate, it’s them,” Putin said in an interview with state television Rossiya 1.
CIA Director William Burns said in an interview published this month that while most conflicts end in negotiations, the CIA’s assessment is that Russia has not yet taken seriously any real negotiations to end the war. war.
An aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Putin needed to come back to reality and acknowledge that it was Russia that did not want any negotiations.
“Russia single-handedly attacked Ukraine and is killing citizens,” Mykhailo Podolyak said on Twitter. “Russia doesn’t want negotiations, but tries to avoid accountability.”
Putin said Russia is moving in the “right direction” in Ukraine because the West, led by the United States, is trying to isolate Russia. Washington denies that he is plotting the collapse of Russia.
“I think we are moving in the right direction, we are defending our national interests, the interests of our citizens, our people. And we have no choice but to protect our citizens,” Putin said.
Asked if the geopolitical conflict with the West was approaching a dangerous level, Putin said: “I don’t think it’s that dangerous.”
