What pregnant women can and cannot do on the beach, in the pool and by the sea to experience the hottest season of the year in safety
The end-of-year holidays have arrived and with them the delicious baking season heat, beach, pool and cold drinks🇧🇷 But since, in general, pregnant women need more attention to what they can and cannot do, it is normal that some questions arise regarding the care pregnant women should have in summer🇧🇷 We talked to the gynecologist and midwife Caroline Curciwhich raised major alert points.
Pregnant woman in the pool and sea
To the delight of those who can’t help but get into the water to cool off, this is the good news there is no risk, in fact, relevant to pregnant women🇧🇷 ” In this case the important thing is that the pregnant woman sees if she’s fine, if she’s available, hydrated… Or if the sun is too hot, for example. It’s so much more about having that thrift and noticing when it’s not okay to go in.” Caroline points out.
If the pool is heated it is fine. keep an eye on the water temperature. If it’s too hot, it tends to increase vasodilation and cause discomfort., warns the obstetrician. At sea, even pregnant women can rest easy, as the waves that finally hit the belly are harmless.
And for those who like to take a dip from time to time, it’s worth it watch out for a wet bikini all day long – not just pregnant women, but all women. “This promotes vaginal pH imbalance, which decreases lactobacilli and increases the possibility of developing vaginosis or candidiasis“, explains the doctor. It is worth remembering that Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans, which cause the problems, can be part of our flora, but when we have a balanced pH, they do not proliferate. “This causes discomfort, as it leads to discharge (leucorrhoea ), fetid smell, itching… It won’t harm the baby, but it will annoy the woman”, adds Carolina.

How to prepare for the sun and heat
The watchword in summer is hydration🇧🇷 And as much as we know, the truth is that, in the midst of having fun, we end up forgetting to drink liquids as often as we should. “Water, sparkling water, flavored water, plain coconut water, fruit juice… Just be careful with excesses. Orange juice is high in calories, so it’s not ideal for someone trying to control weight gain” , points out the midwife.
The important thing is to know how to make healthy choices and be aware of the weather conditions and, of course, of your body. A very hot day, for example, can be misleading, as the absence of strong sunlight can give the impression that the heat is not so intense. Therefore, hydration must be a conscious habit. “I always guide my patients to take a glass of 150 ml to 180 ml of water every hour of exposure“, says Caroline.
In addition to preparing for high temperatures, protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is essential for everyone, but even more so for pregnant women. The obstetrician’s guidance is to use a high protection factor (SPF) sunscreen in the form of a gel – with light texture and long wear, this is a good choice for the beach and the pool. “You also need to remember to reapply the protector all over your body, not just your face, wear a hat, goggles and an umbrella, as well as pay attention to the exposure time. It is worth remembering that everything marked on the skin during pregnancy is very difficult to remove after the puerperium, even with the most advanced technologies,” says the doctor
Finally, it never hurts to reiterate the good old recommendation to be careful when eating out. “Food poisoning will always be worse in pregnant women. We always have to think, ‘Do I need to eat that delicacy? Do I know who does it? Didn’t I bring any other options, fruit…?'”, warns Carolina. According to the midwife, the point is not to ban the consumption of food bought on the beach, but to know the general context.
All these tips are important to better enjoy the heat, keeping the risks of discomfort and negative consequences well away from the mother and the childguaranteeing only the best of summer for the family!
