30 years without Daniella Perez: the series about the murder of the actress premiered in 2022

Exactly 30 years ago, the death of young actress Daniella Perez shocked Brazil. The murder of the author Gloria Perez’s daughter marked the country and in 2022 this story was revived to the public by HBO Max, which launched the documentary series Brutal pact: the murder of Daniella Perezoutstanding production of the year.

Daniella Perez was 22 years old when she was brutally murdered on December 28, 1992 by former actor Guilherme de Pádua and his then wife Paula Thomaz. Pádua, who had become pastor of an evangelical church after serving his sentence for the actress’s death, died after suffering a heart attack in early November this year.

In 1992, Guilherme de Pádua had a brief romantic relationship with Daniella Perez in the telenovela Body and soul, written by Gloria Perez. Annoyed by her reduced role in the soap opera, he even sought out the actress to talk to her mother about her and increase her participation. He believed that the young woman was the cause of her decreased screen time.

On the night of the murder, the former actor and his then-wife followed Daniella when she left the tapings of the soap opera. The pair killed the actress with 18 stab wounds, leaving her in a location with little movement.

Three days after the crime, Guilherme de Pádua and Paula Thomaz were arrested. The couple were tried and convicted of doubly qualified murder, with low motive and the inability to defend the victim. They served six of the nineteen years they were sentenced to in the cloister.

The events surrounding Daniella Perez’s death, her mother’s fight for justice, public outrage and public closeness to the actress, and even the murderous couple’s trial are the subject of the HBO Max documentary series, brutal dealwhich this year has attracted the attention of the Brazilian public.

The five-episode miniseries was released in July 2022 on HBO Max streaming, directed and produced by Tatiana Issa and Guto Barra. The series features testimonies from family, friends and personalities of the time, as well as archival footage that helps tell the story of Daniella Perez’s murder.
