Brazil has Luciana Santos (PCdoB) as its new minister of Science, technology and innovation from Monday (2). As part of the inauguration ceremonies of the new Lula government, the head of the ministry was handed over to the agency’s headquarters in Brasilia. The mandate was signed on Sunday (1).

Santos is the first woman to actually command the portfolio: in 2016, the ministry was temporarily headed by lawyer Emília Maria Silva Ribeiro Curi.

In her inaugural speech, the new minister said she “will honor the thousands of women who produce and do research” in Brazil.

“[Essa gestão] it will honor the anti-racist struggle and the black struggle for space in postgraduate courses and research,” he said.

Santos confirmed that he will work for science and technology to be the pillars of development. She has also undertaken to reassess the folder’s budget.

“We will still work on updating the research grants from CNPq and Capesessential for human capital. Research grants cannot be treated as alms, but as an investment in the country’s future. We can’t admit it talent escape”.

Look at the minister’s political trajectory

Santos is an electrical engineer from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and entered politics in 1984, through the student movement.

In 1995, she assumed the presidency of the Pernambuco Institute of Weights and Measures and held the position until the following year, when she was elected to her first term as a state congresswoman.

From 2000 to 2008 she was mayor of Olinda. Subsequently, she was Secretary of State for Science and Technology, during the administration of Eduardo Campos (PSB) in Pernambuco. In the state portfolio, you participated in the establishment of gratuity at the University of Pernambuco (UPE).

From 2011 to 2018 he represented his state in the Chamber of Deputies and, as a parliamentarian, he participated in the Science and Technology, Communication and Informatics Commission (CTCCI), in the Urban Development Commission (CDU) and in the Culture Commission (CCULT), of which he was vice president.

President of her party, Santos was finishing her tenure as lieutenant governor of Pernambuco, which she took over in 2018, when she was announced by Lula as head of portfolio.
