how to react

To claim that one’s children are “troublemakers” is to be aligned with obscure political forces

Open the door to the room. Your kids have spilled everything on the floor. There are toys and candy wrappers and cookie crumbles and spilled sodas on the new furniture. How do you express your amazement at the scene?

“What a pigsty!” Well, the expression attacks animals and may upset supporters of pigs. Even if it is an unclean animal for Muslims and Jews, it could be an inappropriate phrase. It humiliates children and the Statute of Childhood and Adolescence prohibits public exposure of minors. Avoid.

“What a mess!” Few people know it, but the term is exclusive to Brazil and refers to public reactions to the talent of Marietta Baderna, a famous Italian dancer in Rio in the 19th century, seen with resistance by the elites, who began to use the term to designate something popular and dangerous. “Band of rioters” is a reactionary term to insult social movements. Thus, to claim that your children are “troublemakers” is to be aligned with shady political forces.

Toys on the floor, how to deal with offenders?

“What anarchy!” For the same political implication, I also recommend avoiding this expression.

Spoken by paternal and maternal authority, the reference to the ideals of freedom of the 19th and 20th centuries can be more seductive than reprehensible. When a moralizing element affirms what is wrong, it can be (and usually is) read as an invitation to what is being fought against. I had a professor of Moral Theology who, enunciating wrong behaviors in the sexual field, populated my erotic imagination until today…

The richness of the Portuguese language is enormous. You can opt for riot, turmoil, chaos, pandemonium, uproar, uproar, uproar, uproar or uproar.

I recommend something less common. Do you want attention? Full? Open the door and say in a firm voice: “What a mess!!!”.

Pronounce with the three exclamation points, one by one, leaving nothing out of amazement. Articulate the syllables: fur-dun-ço. The beak in the second part strengthens the impact. Their children have never heard the term. This will cause the departure, origin of Philosophy. The word has an uncertain origin; so it offends little. Healthy, broad, almost neutral term, without animal or political connotations (and… without hurting ECA). Perfect! Do it with a clear voice and nationalist pride: “The furdunço is ours!”.

Finally, encourage offenders to cooperate in the cleanup. Otherwise, you will create persistent “furduncents” who may even end up in politics in the future. Then… it would be a hopeless furdunço.
