However, the index remains at a high level.

Inflation in Italy recorded an increase of 0.3% in December compared to November and of 11.6% compared to the same period of 2021, according to preliminary data released this Thursday (5) by the National Institute of Statistics ( Istat).

The numbers point to a deceleration from November, when inflation rose 0.5% month-on-month and 11.8% year-on-year.

This movement is mainly due to energy goods, whose prices increased by 67.6% in December compared to the same month in 2021, against an increase of 64.7% in November.

Annual raw food inflation also lost steam, falling from 11.4% to 9.5%. On the other hand, regulated energy goods such as electricity and gas tariffs (from 57.9% to 70.3%) and processed food (from 14.3% to 14.9%) recorded an acceleration.

In 2022, average inflation in Italy was 8.1%, the highest value since 1985 (9.2%). .
