Democracy cannot be taken for granted, says Mattarella

The president stresses that democratic management must be careful

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, affirmed that freedom and democracy cannot be taken for granted forever and that it is necessary to cultivate them also through “good politics”.

The statement is in the preface of a book in honor of the former president of the European Parliament David Sassoli, who passed away in early 2022, and who is currently editing Claudio Sardo.

“Democracy and freedom already have solid roots, but it would be a serious mistake to consider them ineradicable because today they seem guaranteed. Solidarity, respect for the environment, building peace. participation and able to make effective decisions for citizens”, writes the representative.

Mattarella also underlined the importance of the European Union, stating that the blockade represents “an essential and indispensable dimension for our democracy and for the freedom of every citizen”.

“Without the European institutions, the states alone, even the largest ones, would be powerless in the face of increasingly global challenges: from climate change to migratory movements, from demographic dynamics to geopolitical and military ones conducted by players of continental dimensions, to economic dynamics and financial powers that go beyond borders and condition the markets”, he also underlined.

In his preface, Mattarella also underlined the importance of Sassoli in the European Parliament, stating that the Italian “has contributed to affirming the relevance and prestige” of the institution “an increasingly effective, democratic and participatory integration”.

“To this end, Sassoli fought hard and held the Conference on the future of Europe, also in the conviction of the need to amend some treaties.
