Composer Michael Giacchino, who made his directorial debut directing the Marvel special “Werewolf in the Night” (2022), will direct a remake of the sci-fi classic “The World in Peril” (Them!, 1954).

The original film, directed by Gordon Douglas, showed a New Mexico town threatened by giant ants created as a result of atomic tests carried out in the region. Amidst the creatures’ attacks, the authorities must get to the queen ant to stop her from mating and kill her.

“There’s always a movie that sticks in your head,” Giacchino told Deadline. “To me, that movie is ‘World in Peril.’ It wasn’t until much later in life that I learned what it was all about: the nuclear age.”

The director also explained what his approach will be like. According to him, the original film “is about the other, the unknown that we reject or fail to understand. The current version of ‘The World in Peril’ is about immigration and tells a story about that subject through the lens of this crazy sci-fi monster movie.”

Best known for his work as composer of successful soundtracks, such as “Up: Altas Aventuras” (2009), “Jurassic World: O Mundo dos Dinossauros” (2015) and “Batman” (2022), Giacchino intends to devote more directing in the future, but without abandoning the soundtrack. Therefore, in addition to directing, he should also compose the soundtrack of the new “O Mundo em Perrigo”.

Produced by Warner Bros., the film does not yet have a shooting schedule or premiere date.

Michael Giacchino is currently scoring the sports comedy “Next Goal Wins,” directed by Taika Waititi (“Thor: Love and Thunder”), which will be released in September.
