The protests accuse the government of responsibility for the landmine explosion
The Turkish police intervened with force in the city of Izmir to disperse about 20,000 demonstrators who denounced the government’s responsibility for the Soma mine disaster, where 282 people died. Tear gas has even been used to disperse people. The president of the Disco union, one of the most important in the country, Kani Beko, had to be hospitalized after the police attacked the protesters.
Other demonstrations are planned in other Turkish cities, particularly in Ankara and Istanbul, the scene of clashes between police and demonstrators yesterday, 14. Several unions have called a day of strike today to protest above all against the lack of security in the country’s mines and denounce the responsibilities of the government of the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the Soma disaster, the most serious in the country’s modern history. Visiting Soma, Erdogan was challenged yesterday by relatives of miners who were killed or are still trapped in the mine with little chance of survival. Family members booed the prime minister and asked for his resignation. Yesterday Turkey proclaimed three days of national mourning in honor of the victims of the disaster. Last Tuesday, the 13th, an explosion occurred two meters deep in a private coal mine in Soma. Coal mine safety has long been a hot topic in Turkey. In November last year, 300 miners protested in Zonguldak against ineffective measures to increase worker protection.
