We will have to wait for ‘Avatar 3’ to find out the fate of this new war in Pandora, but first we must analyze how the cards have been dealt on the table.
What happens at the end of ‘Avatar: The Shape of Water’? How is the story for the future of the characters and also of the James Cameron saga? We explain everything that happened at the end of ‘Avatar 2’, which has already become one of the highest grossing films in history.
We have been able to talk about the end of the first ‘Avatar’ and the fate of Jake Sully for more than a decade. Of the sequel, however, we have less time. We will have to wait two years, until December 20, 2024, to resolve all our doubts with ‘Avatar 3’. We have already read that in the sequel we will see a Na’vi tribe of fire, or that in the fifth installment the inhabitants of Pandora will come to Earth. Nevertheless, We know that the wait is going to be long for all those who have been as astonished by the return to Pandora as or even more amazed than the first.
The reason is simple: unlike the first installment, ‘The sense of water’ does not have a conclusive ending. Although here we have translated ‘The Way of Water’ like this, the truth is that we could have chosen to translate ‘way’ more literally, as the ‘camino’, and this sequel is a preparation for a new great war in the sequel. We will have to wait two years to see it, but it would be wrong to say that there is not much to cut in the final stretch of ‘The Sense of Water’ before that “to be continued” leaves everything on hold. And no, in case you were wondering, ‘Avatar 2: The Sense of Water’ does not have a post-credits scene.
‘Avatar 2: The Sense of Water’: Ending Explained
Three hours is a long time, too much to summarize here. But let’s remember that the RDA returns to Pandora with a Na’vi avatar of Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) at the helm. Beyond the intentions of humans in general, whether to colonize Pandora, whether whale oil gives immortality, what is really important in this installment is Quaritch’s desire for revenge against Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña ).
Being the target, Jake resigns as Olo’eyktan of the Omatikaya and goes with his family to hide among the tribes of the reef. We have his three biological children, created pigtail for pigtail: Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) and Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss). However, the most important is Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), biological daughter of the deceased avatar of Dr. Grace Augustine, with a mysterious father. Also around is Spider, Quaritch’s biological human son who stayed on Pandora and is very close to the children of the Sully family.
They all end up with the Metkayina clan, led by Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and Ronal (Kate Winslet). Of these, what stands out the most is his link with the Tulkun, a species of really intelligent whales that are being decimated by humans because a liquid from their brain prolongs life indefinitely. Quaritch uses a whaling ship to lure the Metkayinas out, bringing Sully and his family with them.
First Quaritch captures Lo’ak and Tuk, as well as Tonowari and Ronal’s daughter, Tsireya (Bailey Bass), Lo’ak’s love interest. Although the Tulkun are not violent, the outcast Payakan decides to once again break the vow of nonviolence for which he was outcast and confront the RDA who have captured his friend Lo’ak.
It is then that an epic battle breaks out where the water is filled with fire and the ship is half destroyed. In this process, the most important thing is that Neteyam is fatally shot rescuing his brothers. With Kiri and Tuk still being held, Neytiri uses Spider, Quaritch’s biological son, as a hostage, surprising her own children. Quaritch capitulates and releases Sully’s daughters. The battle between the two proclaims Sully the winner, and the family leaves Quaritch behind, leaving them for dead.
On a sinking ship and in danger of drowning, everyone tries to escape. However, they do not succeed until the help of Kiri, who shows an unusual connection with Eywa, and sends a kind of luminous plankton that guides her family to her exit. What they don’t know is that Spider has decided that there will be a sequel and has saved the bad guy, his biological father, in secret.
Although she could have stayed with him, and yet she decides to return to Sully’s family, we will have to see how the Na’vi respond when more of their own die because of that betrayal. The conflict between Spider and the rest of the Na’vi, especially a Neytiri who will never see him as her family (and less so after saving her son’s murderer and her parents) will be key in the third installment, as well as the reason paternal? of the connection between Kiri and Eywa.
It looks like the movie is going to end the way it started, with the Sullys fleeing to another village. However, Tonowari and Ronal claim that once they have buried Neteyam with their own, the Sullys are full-fledged Metkayina. And that if they have to fight they will do it together.
“We are sea people now, this is our home. I can’t save my family by running away… This is our fortress, this is where we will stand our ground,” says Jake Sully in a voice-over at the end of the tape.
Honestly, given the fight and a people dying for your family, the logical thing to do would be to go back to the forest, where you have spent a decade, and fight alongside your tribe in favorable conditions for your physique. Anyway, Cameron has always liked diving, so the Sullys stay to fight on the reef. However, we would not be surprised if the third installment takes us to other places in Pandora.
Soon ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ will arrive on Disney + and we will be able to review it even more closely.
