Haddad Reevaluates Timing of Classified Ads After Government Agenda Hijacked by Attacks in Brasilia

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad is re-discussing with the Civil House the calendar of the government’s first economic measures after the attention of the political world was captured by the attacks on the Three Powers in Brasilia, with the risk of postponing the first planned actions from the economics team, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Urged to present concrete actions and assessments on the country’s fiscal situation, Haddad predicted that the first revelations would take place this week. With talks still preliminary ahead of the new scenario, the plan could change.

“It is possible that there is some delay in disclosure. The situation is very complicated,” one of the sources said, on condition of anonymity.

Another interlocutor of the folder said that the agenda of the week could change, with a possible postponement of the first measures.

Haddad would also close the list of actions to be implemented with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Courses of action include reevaluating federal revenues for 2023 and measures to expand revenues and cut spending.

Among the measures studied are an extraordinary incentive to reduce litigation to the CARF (Fiscal Resources Administration Council) and the revaluation of tax exemptions implemented by the Jair Bolsonaro government.

The minister also asked to give priority to studies of structural reforms, such as fiscal and tax reforms, but these initiatives already have a longer period to be implemented. Until last week, Haddad expected a debate on the issues in the first three months of government and the effective start of analysis by Congress from April.

After radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and destroyed the Planalto Palace, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court on Sunday, Haddad is personally attending emergency meetings with President Lula and representatives of other powers.

Two other sources from the economic area say that the work of the finance ministry’s technical staff continues to proceed normally. While one of them says that the presentation of the shares will still depend on the decision of Haddad and Lula, the other hopes that the calendar will not be affected by recent events.

In another area of the economic team that will be affected by the actions of the Bolsonarists, the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services is responsible for the secretariat that manages the Union’s assets. Therefore, the portfolio must accompany the survey of the damage caused by the protesters and the elaboration of the recovery plan of the buildings.

This Monday, the Minister of Management, Esther Dweck, was among the names who would participate in an economics seminar at the University of Brasilia. Participation has been cancelled.
