Our filmmakers are also sweeping internationally
The cinema of 2022 continues to expand its borders. Our international festivals and the new forms of consumption of the film scene, in an increasingly orderly coexistence (in the absence of regulating in an intelligent and equitable way, for both parties, the exhibition time in the different windows), have allowed us to enjoy productions from countries far removed from the usual distribution and exhibition circuits.
This trend will increase in the coming years, but this year marks a radical inflection. Like the fact that significant North American western productions have been left at the gates of this selection (tarof Todd Field, Everything Everywhere All at Onceof Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert either Banshees by Inisherinof Martin McDonald), overwhelmed by the creativity and oriental originality of countries like Lebanon, India or Pakistan.
Without a doubt, the best news of the year is the sweeping triumph of our best filmmakers. Not only have they conquered viewers in movie theaters, but they have also swept the best international festivals, thanks to Carla Simón, Estíbaliz Urresola, Irene M. Borrego, Albert Serra, Adrián Silvestre, Eduardo Casanova… (the last two filmmakers, by the way, stayed at the gates of the best of Spanish-language cinema with their impeccable my emptiness and me Y mercy).
Without further suspense, here are the 15 best films of the year in a foreign language, in any of its duration or genre formats.
fifteen. Fire of loveby Sara Dosa (United States). Or how to make the best romantic movie of the year with lots of volcanoes and a sense of hypnotic editing and photography.
14. The triangle of sadnessby Ruben Östlund (Sweden). The Nordic filmmaker leaves no one cold or indifferent with his x-rays of paranoia, the loss of reference and Western values, and an affirmed corrosive sense of humor.
13. all that breathesby Shaunak Sen (UK). Impossible not to fall in love with this magnificent nonfiction about the black kites of the city of Delhi. Neither mario camus neither Miguel Delibes They could have imagined the prominence that a beautiful kite can achieve.
12. joylandfrom Saim Sadiq (Pakistan). 126 minutes, touched by grace, the best that contemporary queer cinema can offer. As impressive as necessary.
eleven. Great Yarmouth: Provisional Figuresby Marco Martins (Portugal). Cinema in Portuguese has been in full creative explosion for a few years and places three films in this selection.
10. All The Beauty and the Bloodshedby Laura Poitras (United States). Epic, activist, immense, radiant… there are no adjectives to define it.
9. Fatuous Fireby João Pedro Rodrigues (Portugal). The filmmaker’s ability to condense the most burning current affairs into 67 minutes, with the best of humor and social criticism, is textbook. brilliant.
8. Warshaby Dania Bdeir (Lebanon). One of the images of 2022 that will remain forever etched in the viewer’s retina. And the short film that scares me the most in the career of Oscarsin front of our four shortlisted.
7. aftersunfrom Charlotte Wells (UK). The surprise of the year with the best international first film. The perfect combination of beauty combined with exquisite sensitivity.
6. heyby Jerzy Skolimowski (Poland). The Polish film master never disappoints, but with this marvel of the seventh art he has managed to excel.
5. holy spiderby Ali Abbasi (Denmark). Dirty realism (reaffirmed with his way of filming) taken to its purest essence, in the form of a misogynist and macho nightmare. The thriller of the year, if not of the decade.
Four. Saint Omerby Alice Diop (France). One of the few movies of the year that should be seen at least three times. Fascinating.
3. closeby Lukas Dhont (Belgium). One of those films that explains the meaning of life and the true value of friendship, while at the same time captivating you with its narrative construction and editing skills. Background and form, impeccable.
2. regra 34by Julia Murat (Brazil). A literally radiant actress Sun Miranda, together with one of the most promising filmmakers on the world scene, make regra 34 in a jewel of contemporary cinema.
one. Pacificationby Albert Serra (France). The contemporary berlanga arrabalesco touch, together with his magical way of shooting and his limitless imagination, make Albert Serra one of our best filmmakers. Awards Nominee gaudi already the Fiercein Spain, at lumieres (prelude to the Césars), in France, suggest that it will sweep the other side of the border (the prize for Benoit Magimel is almost a given, but there may be more).
With Pacification, Albert Serra updates a post-colonialist Don Quixote, immensely alone (I dare say exactly how the director feels in the cinematographic universe), who has long since lost his last and inseparable friend, Sancho, and who only has company left an inspiring Dulcinea, quintessence of femininity, in a world that leaves no room for personal definition. A must of cinema screens today and a future classic of the seventh art.
An extraordinary annual harvest that heralds an even better 2023. Happy New Year to all.
