The Italian has been remembered by several European authorities
The death of former European Parliament president David Sassoli turned one year old this Wednesday (11), a date marked by numerous tributes to the Italian politician.
Born in Florence, Sassoli died in an oncological hospital in Aviano. The reporter had to be hospitalized for “immune system dysfunction”, and had previously been hospitalized with pneumonia.
Various Italian and European Union authorities recalled Sassoli on social media. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, declared that the memory of Italian “still warms our hearts and shows us the way forward”.

Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte followed up with Von der Leyen’s reasoning by noting that Sassoli’s memories “remain very vivid”. The mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, said that the former president’s ideas “are needed more than ever”.
“Always on the right side, alongside the weakest, David had the ability to distinguish himself in every situation through style, competence and, above all, courage. With the strength of his ideas and tireless commitment, David gave a essential contribution to changing Europe and making it more united, just and close to the citizens”, said the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri.
The current president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, highlighted several points of Sassoli in his honour, such as his “values of democracy, faith in a just world and determination to protect the most vulnerable”.
It’s been a year since David Sassoli left us.
Since we lost one of us: a leader, a friend, a fighter for social justice.
His values of democracy, his belief in a just world, his determination to protect the most vulnerable, still resonate with us today.

A passionate pro-European, Sassoli stood out for defending the reception of migrants and refugees and for calling for more drastic reactions against authoritarian measures in Eastern European member states. The Italian was also in favor of greater integration into the bloc. .
