Santos makes his debut in the year 2023 this Saturday, in a duel against Mirassol in Vila Belmiro, at 20:30 (Brasilia time), for the first round of the Paulista Championship. The moment is now one of renewed expectations, with the season about to start, but the last match against the San Paolo team was marked by a little positive moment for Peixe.
It was only Paulistão’s seventh game of 2022, but the alvinegro team was already going through a small crisis. Santos went to the city of Mirassol, at the Estádio Municipal José Maria de Campos Maia, and was defeated by the opponent 3 to 2. The result does not indicate anything very worrying, but the performance in that match was by far lower than expected.
Under manager Fábio Carille, Peixe had a lackluster first half and saw a real trample from Mirassol, who scored three goals in under 40 minutes. The team responded in the final stage and reduced the score, but it was not enough to reach a draw.
The weak performance, however, was the last straw for a team already getting off to a bad start at State. Until then, six games had been played, with three draws, two wins and one defeat. Carille, then, could not resist the pressure of the crowd and was dismissed.
Even with the change of command, the Baixada Santos club did not evolve over the course of the season. From there have passed the Argentine Fabián Bustos, the gaucho Lisca and the interim Orlando Ribeiro, who have experienced ups and downs at the helm of the team. In the end, Santos fought not to fall until the last round of Paulista and had an average season in the Brasileirão.
Now, with Odair Hellmann, Peixe is looking forward to resuming his role at regional and national level. The team are in Group A of the State, alongside Botafogo-SP, Bragantino and Inter de Limeira, and are looking to overcome the frustration of the past two years to win their 23rd title in the competition.
