In Women Talking, a group of sexual assault survivors gather to discuss the way forward. We caught up with director Sarah Polley with her cast to talk about strength and power.

Hay, recognize the cast and crew of women talk, a derogatory joke that people might not go see a movie that tells the story of this title so literally. It would be his loss. The story begins in a haystack in a Mennonite colony (an Anabaptist Christian denomination), where nine women talk about overcoming sexual abuse at the hands of men. women talking It absolutely lives up to its title, but these women and this film couldn’t be more alive.

Adapting Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name, she draws myriad parallels to our world: the #MeToo movement, of course, which began a year before the book’s publication, but also the systematic silencing and curtailment of women. only tools and muses, a practice that permeates a patriarchal society.

Writer-director Sarah Polley, a political activist and former actress, has suffered abuses of power. in a 2017 New York Times editorial, wrote about her deeply disturbing experience with Harvey Weinstein and in her 2022 memoir run into danger she said she was sexually assaulted when she was 16.

The women in Polley’s film are brave, intelligent, angry and hopeful human beings. Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Rooney Mara are the loudest in the colony, protecting their young and looking to a new future. Empire she sat down with them and Polley to listen to them talk, passionately, sometimes angrily, but always hopefully, about the power of women and how to build a better world together. And it may be lighthearted, but it’s far from a joke.
