Oscar favorite wins another award

Brendan Fraser, the frontrunner for the Academy Award for Best Actor, won the award in the same category at the Critics Choice Awards for his work in The whale and capped off his evening with one of the most moving speeches of the evening.

Fraser broke down in tears when his name was announced as the winner and quoted when he took the stage that Herman Melville “once wrote that there are only five critics in America, the rest are asleep.” Though the actor said he didn’t know exactly what he meant, he said he was “happy [que os críticos] woke up for me”.

He continued: “This film, The whale, talk about love, talk about redemption. It’s about finding light in a dark place and I’m so lucky to have worked with an ensemble that is incredible.” Fraser acknowledged his co-stars when naming Hong Chau, saying that “they should have their own film based on every character that have ever interpreted”.

Sadie Sink also received praise, with the actor noting that she’s “amazing.” Fraser called Sam Hunter the “beacon” of him and said that Ty Simpkins “won the game every day”.

Brendan Fraser added: “Darren Aronofsky, I was in the desert and probably should have left a trail of bread crumbs, but you found me. And like all the best directors, you just showed me where to go to get where I needed to be.

The Oscar Favorite Actor concluded his speech by sharing a powerful message by saying, “If you, like a guy like Charlie, who I played in this movie, somehow struggle with obesity or just feel like you’re in a dark sea. I want you to know that if you too can have the strength to get up and walk towards the light. Good things will happen.”

When the actor went backstage, he said the award meant “more than I can put into words”, adding that making the film was “a leap of faith. We all approached this comedy as if it were our first and the last time we would ever get the chance to do this kind of work… I think this movie can help to do a lot of good.

In the film in question, directed by Darren Aronofsky, Brendan Fraser plays Charlie, a teacher of 270 kg, who can’t get off the couch, and full of emotional problems.

The whale arrives in Brazilian theaters on February 23.
