If something is clear in Avatar: the path of waterIt’s a family matter. James Cameron’s mammoth box office sequel follows the ongoing adventures of the Sully clan, with Jake and Neytiri now raising a whole gang of lanky kids as they’re forced to flee their treehouse to the shores of tropical Pandora’s reefs . Naturally, the use of the f-word (“family”, not the other) tends to catch the attention of Vin Diesel, who posted a video on his Instagram in 2019 with Cameron himself from the Avatars together, strongly suggesting he landed a role in the director’s multiple sequels.
It turns out that’s not the case. “Vin was a fan,” producer Jon Landau confirms in a conversation with Empire. “One day he came in, he visited the set to see what we were doing and people took him out of context.” Diesel has likely fanned the flames when it comes to rumors that he’s going big and blue in the near future (“There’s one person in Hollywood that I’ve always wanted to work with and learn from, so it all comes down to, I guess, what do you expect ”said the actor in his Instagram video), but for now, Diesel is sticking to the Fast lane instead of taking a flight to Pandora.
This notion of family, however, will continue to inform the next influx of Avatars stories. “Hopefully, the path of the water it came to its conclusion, as I think every film will,” says Landau. “But they bring things together because we’re investing more and more in these characters. Where is Kiri going? What does Lo’ak do? What decisions will Jake and Neytiri have to make? All of these things will continue to drive our story forward. Since Cameron’s roadmap consists of four Avatars sequels overall, with three yet to come, you could say we’re taking the Sully family story a quarter saga at a time.
