In the first classic after his return, Veiga tries to regain the limelight at Palmeiras

Palmeiras and São Paulo face off this Sunday, at 4pm, at the Allianz Parque

Having recovered from injury after missing the last leg of last season with an ankle injury, midfielder Raphael Veiga will have the chance to return to being one of Palmeiras’ protagonists, precisely against the rival he helped slaughter in the final of the latter Paulista Championship: The St. Paul.

On the occasion, the midfielder scored two of the four goals for Abel Ferreira’s side that won the edition. Now, this Sunday (22nd), at 4pm, at the Allianz Parque, the teams will face off again for the third round of the State Championship.

Raphael Veiga has already proven that he is 100% after being sidelined for nearly five months. The player scored a great goal that guaranteed Palmeiras victory over Botafogo-SP, in Ribeirão Preto, in the last round of the championship. And, with the departure of Gustavo Scarpa, Veiga is Palmeiras’ main hope in May.

Veiga is one goal away from finishing second on Palmeiras’s scoring list this century – he already has 65, just behind Willian Bigode, with 66 – and 34th in club history, a position currently held by Willian.

– I’ve always liked scoring goals, I know he helps Palmeiras directly, both goals and assists. So, whenever I have the opportunity in the game, I try to finish, I go into the box, because that’s where the game is decided. I’m happy to score more goals and I hope to score many again this season,” said the midfielder.

The player believes that playing against the Tricolor is always difficult, but he believes in the strength of Palmeiras in the first derby of the season at San Paolo.

– All the matches that we will play up to the Super Cup against Flamengo are matches that we will improve and will help us to achieve even more integrity. San Paolo are a great team, every time we play against them they give us a lot of difficulties. It’s another difficult match and we have all it takes to play a good match if we put intensity and competitiveness, because this is the foundation of our team – concluded Veiga.

Both Palmeiras and São Paulo are looking for their second victory in Paulistão. Both have four points in the competition and want to pack for season-long streaks.
