Spoilers for the ‘Outlander’ season 6 finale below
Has been a very short season of ‘Outlander’ this year, but these eight episodes had a lot to tellfrom revelations about a young Ian with the Mohawk and Fergus’s harrowing suicide attempt, to Claire’s mysterious fever and her growing reliance on the ether to cope with post-traumatic stress.
Of course, the biggest surprises at Fraser’s Ridge were brought by the Christie family, and at the end of episode seven, Claire was accused of the murder of Malva, who was pregnant and had accused Jamie of being the father of her baby.
Let’s break down what happened in that tense season finale (needless to say: they come spoilers).
What happened to Claire and Jamie?
The Season 6 finale opens with a dialogue-free scene set in a 20th-century American diner, with Claire (we know it’s her because we can see her wedding ring) and, presumably, a teenage Bree (hiding behind a menu). ) who are served burgers and fries. It may be a short scene, but its meaning becomes clear a bit later..
In the 18th century, the episode picks up where the previous one left off when the Committee of Safety arrives at the Fraser house to arrest Claire. She is understandably reluctant to go with them, not only because they seem like very mean armed vigilantes, but also because their leader is Richard Brown, the gruff brother of the late evil Lionel, who kidnapped and raped Claire in season five (and who has been a shadowy figure who taunts her in her nightmares).
Claire whispers to the housekeeper, Mrs. Bug, to run for help., and Jamie sees Lizzie and Josiah in the distance sneaking off, hoping to gather more family members to protect them. However, they can’t get there soon enough, as one of Brown’s men has already managed to break into the Frasers’ house. Claire shoots him, while Jamie tries to fight off the men from outside.
Soon his house is under attack, and Jamie and Claire block the windows with the dining room tables (although we think they should have blown out the candles first) and other furniture as the gunshots shatter windows, dishes, and everything else in your home.
Jamie is convinced that Richard Brown is there to get revenge for his brother’s death, but Brown says he just wants to get Claire to Salisbury, where there’s a court so she can stand trial for Malva’s murder.. Jamie refuses, and it looks like the Frasers are in for a long night under siege with the Committee waiting outside.
So, where is everyone else? Well Brianna, Roger and their son Jemmy are on a long journey to make Roger a churchman. Meanwhile, Fergus, Marsali, and his ever-growing brood live in New Bern, where Fergus owns a printing shop and has just published his first newsletter, the New Bern Onion (so called because it’s so layered).
There’s no sign of young Ian either, so Claire and Jamie stay inside the house eating quietly (probably realizing they may never get a chance to eat again) while they wait for the next attack. To have a light conversation over dinnerClaire explains to Jamie the concept of a death row inmate’s last meal, revealing that her choice would be a cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke from the restaurant she used to go to with Brianna., a nod to the opening scene of the episode. Is the ‘Outlander’ crew trying to tell us that Claire could be eating her last meal before being sentenced to death?
It all sounds pretty dire, but fans of the lovable cat Adso will at least be relieved to learn that he survived the house break-in. But the situation does not improve much when locals armed with flaming torches arrive to help the Committee. A handful of relatives show up to support Jamie and Claire, but they aren’t enough, and Jamie realizes the only option for him and Claire is to go with the Committee to Salisbury.
Surprisingly, Malva’s father, Tom Christie, steps in to promise Claire and Jamie’s safety on the trip., and suggests that they leave in the morning for the couple to spend the night in their own bed. And there we have an intimate night with the Frasers, who perhaps feel that their chances of future sex are as likely as another meal together.
The next day, the gang, with Claire and Jamie in a wagon, head to Salisbury, but Richard Brown’s plan quickly changes when he discovers that the local sheriff has resigned and no trial is taking place there. He decides that the next closest town, Cross Creek, is not an option due to the influence of Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta, so Wilmington becomes your destination even though it is 200 miles away.
An increasingly gaunt Tom Christie feels guilty about what is happening to Claire, especially when they hear that Brown has spread the word far and wide that Claire is a murderer, resulting in angry villagers stoneing Claire’s cart. the couple. Could it be because he knows that Claire is innocent, and furthermore, he knows who really killed his daughter Malva?
Oblivious to all this hundreds of miles away, Roger and Bree are dealing with something much more mundane: It looks like little Jemmy has head lice.. After all her hair is cut off as a treatment, Brianna sees a mark on her son’s head that she hadn’t seen before. She is worried, but Roger is not, since he has the same. The same!
In case we all forgot, Roger was never sure if he was Jemmy’s biological father, because Stephen Bonnet raped Bree the same night she first slept with Roger.. The mark, since it is hereditary, proves that Jemmy is definitely Roger’s son. So at least someone is doing well in this series.
In the meantime, Jamie and Claire are far from happy, but things take a turn for the better when young Ian appears from behind some bushes. to let Jamie know that he, shaggy friend John Quincy Myers, and a few friends are nearby. However, Jamie and Claire are unable to escape, as the locals waiting for an entertaining hanging are very likely to turn them in if they see them.
Perhaps Jamie should have trusted Ian to get them to safety anyway, since the next morning Brown’s men grab Jamie and Brown takes Claire away in the wagon, determined to take her to Wilmington and the gallows that awaits her there. Tom Christie attempts to intervene and makes Brown promise that Jamie will not be harmed before accompanying Claire to make sure she is not killed on the trip.
Days later, they arrive at Wilmington, where signs of unrest are shown as residents fight for independence against the British. Brown takes Claire to jail and declares that she will see her hanged, although Tom Christie promises that he will not leave her unprotected, not exactly the actions of a man who believes that Claire killed her daughter.
So, Why hasn’t Jamie come to save Claire? Well, he’s a bit tied up (literally) with Brown’s men, who are preparing to put him on a ship to Scotland to get rid of the Highlander warrior once and for all.
However, they haven’t counted on young Ian’s daring rescue, and our Mohawk-haired hero shows up with Myers and his native friends just in time, shooting the bad guys holding Jamie. The series ends with Ian, Jamie, Myers, and friends riding along the beach, presumably heading to Wilmington, where Claire is imprisoned..
So, Will Jamie make it to Claire in time? And who killed Malva? Looks like we’ll have to wait until season seven next year to get some answers…
