The capital of Congo is armored for the visit of Pope Francis

Catholic leader arriving in Kinshasa on January 31st

The northern part of the city of Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), will be declared “pontifical jurisdiction” during Pope Francis’ visit to the city, local media reported on Monday (23).

With this, people who have had a “special authorization” will be able to move in that area only between January 31 and the morning of February 3, when the Catholic leader will leave the country for South Sudan. The traffic restriction will apply to both vehicles and pedestrians.

The area of jurisdiction will include the Palazzo della Patria, the Central Bank, the Interdiocesan Center, the Nunciature and some hotels.

Car traffic will be completely rearranged to avoid problems.

The Pope’s visit to the DRC is surrounded by security measures. Recently, in an interview with the Spanish magazine “Mundo Negro”, the pontiff reported that one of the stages of the trip that was to take place in Goma was postponed due to the presence of the “guerrillas”.

According to the head of the Catholic Church, the fear is not for his own integrity, but for the risk that criminal groups will drop bombs in places of great concentration of the faithful and kill “many people”. .
