Back to Black: Everything We Know About the Amy Winehouse Biopic

Still without a premiere date, the feature film starring Marisa Abela has already started recording and had its first records released

The newest artist to have a new biopic announced is Amy Winehouse. Entitled back to blackthe film will seek to tell the tragic story of one of the most unique voices of the 21st century.

Born in 1983, Amy has always been seen as a musical phenomenon. From an early age, she joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, a traditional jazz orchestra from the United Kingdom. He was signed to a record label before turning 20 years old.

Released their debut album, Frankin 2003, but really broke out in 2006 with the second (and last), back to black. Not by chance, the title of the film that will tell the story of the singer took the same name as the album.Amy died in July 2011, aged 27, after a long time suffering from chemical dependency and having his decadence portrayed by the media, often cruelly.

The main professionals involved with back to black their names have already been released. The direction is in charge of the filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnsonwho even led the recording of the biopic Nowhere Man (2009), about John Lennonthe eternal vocalist and guitarist of Beatles. The public’s greatest curiosity was around the name of the actress who would play Amy Winehouse. The chosen one was Marisa Abelaknown for her work on the series Industrygives HBO. Jack O’Connell (Skins) will make Blake Fielder-Civilhusband of Amy between 2007 and 2009. Eddie Marsan (v for Vendetta, Mission: Impossible III) it will be Mitch Winehouse, father of the artist. Finally, Lesley Manville (The Crown) will live the grandmother of Amy, Cynthia Winehousewho was a renowned jazz singer.

As expected, the entire trajectory of Amy Winehouse will be told throughout the film. The promise is that the feature will address the early days of the singer’s career, in the early 2000s, still as a jazz artist. At the time, she resided in North London and performed in local nightclubs.

The rise with hits like “rehab”, “back to black” and “You Know I’m No Good” will also be duly narrated in the work, which should not fail to present the artist’s personal problems with addiction. The troubled relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil is another point that will be present, considering that, in addition to conflicts and extramarital relationships, he was the one who introduced drugs to the singer.

Since the death of Amy Winehouse, in 2011, there are attempts to transform the singer’s life into film projects. The project that came closest to this was the award-winning documentary Amyreleased in 2015. In the same year, the production company lotus entertainment tried to make a movie with the swedish Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) in the role of the artist, but the project did not follow.

It was only in October 2018 that the singer’s estate agreed to sign a contract for a film in the format of a biopic. THE StudioCanal UK produces the work in partnership with Monumental Pictures and is responsible for UK distribution, while Focus Features obtained the rights in the United States.

Back to Black: Songs present

In biopics that were not authorized by the artists or their respective estates, it is not possible to use the songs of the portrayed personality. Some recent examples include All is By My Side (2014), about Jimi Hendrixand Stardust (2020), regarding David Bowie.

Fortunately, this will not be the case for back to black. As it is a work authorized by the estate of Amy Winehouseyour biggest hits can be used on the track.

Back to Black: Recordings started

No release date has yet been set for back to black, but recordings have already started in London. Some scenes were even filmed in a jazz club where the artist performed in her youth, the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, and outside her first flat in Camden Town.
