The Korean science fiction movie can already be seen on Netflix and this is all that has happened in its sad ending.
Spoilers for the ending of Netflix’s ‘JUNG_E’ below.
The creator of ‘Hell’s Course’, Yeon Sang-ho, returns to the Netflix movie catalog with the sci-fi epic ‘JUNG_E’, set in the year 2194, when humanity moves into space due to the rapid advance of climate change. Having built shelters at different points on Earth and the Moon, humanity settled into a new existence. However, when three of those havens decided to declare independence under the name Adrian’s Republic, a civil war began and the battle has raged for decades.
Military AI development company Kronoid believes it has found the solution to end war by creating a fighting warrior known as JUNG_E. But the project has a personal connection to Kronoid’s lead researcher, Yun Seo-hyun (Kang Soo-youn). And that personal connection leads to an emotional and action-packed finale, so let’s dig into it to answer any remaining questions. Major spoilers are ahead, so read no further if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
JUNG_E ending explained: who is JUNG_E?
At the beginning of the film it is revealed that JUNG_E is a clone of Seo-hyun’s mother, Yun Jung-yi (Kim Hyun-joo).who was a “legendary mercenary” and a war hero.
35 years earlier, Jung-yi fell into a coma after a failed mission working for the Republic of Adrian. Kronoid got permission to clone his brain to create the ultimate combat AIusing only the combat data in his brain to give him all of Jung-yi’s strengths, but none of his weaknesses.
Kronoid aims to make her a “lasting hero of the Allied Force” by creating an army of JUNG_Es that can end the war. However, no matter how many simulation tests they perform, JUNG_E always fails at the same point and cannot complete the mission.
Seo-hyun is working on the project, but she feels guilty that her mother’s cloned brain is in this endless cycle of war. And it is that Jung-yi became a mercenary to finance Seo-hyun’s lung cancer treatment and, the day her surgery was successful and saved her life, it was the day of the failed mission that left her mother in a coma.
Unfortunately, Seo-hyun discovers that the cancer has returned and is now terminal. Like her mother, you could clone her brain, but it’s expensive unless you go with Type C, which is free and allows companies to make countless clones of her.
In his next simulation test, a new area of JUNG_E’s brain begins to activate that could be the key to success. However, before they can explore further, the civil war ends thanks to an agreement between the Republic of Adrian and the Allied Force.
Seo-hyun is told to turn off the combat AI program to housekeeper or service person. As he closes the program, he notices that one of the test models is being tested as a sex robot.with Kronoid eager to exploit the “famous war hero” in other rather questionable fields.
Believing that it is her fault that her late mother is in this position, Seo-hyun awakens the latest test model JUNG_E and discovers that the new area of his brain is Jung-yi’s memories.. She realizes that the reason JUNG_E always fails is because Jung-yi’s brain is thinking about her daughter’s surgery and gets distracted from her.
In order to “save” her mother, Seo-hyun erases that part of JUNG_E’s brain and tells her the truth about her situation before the final simulation. JUNG_E fails the test again, but this time she pretends to be “dead” and tries to escape the facility.
Seo-hyun removes the data from Jung-yi’s brain and helps JUNG_E escape by taking her brain and putting it into another combat AI, which means she doesn’t look like her mother anymore. During her escape, Seo-hyun is fatally shot by the Kronoid lab director, who is trying to stop JUNG_E from escaping..
A huge battle ensues between JUNG_E and the director (as well as a bunch of combat AI), but JUNG_E is victorious. The AI wants to save Seo-hyun, but the female lead tells JUNG_E not to worry about her. “Live only for yourself, be free,” she tells JUNG_E, who Seo-hyun thinks doesn’t remember her anymore..
However, in his last goodbye, JUNG_E rubs his face against Seo-hyun like his mother used to do, which means that JUNG_E still has memories of his past life. JUNG_E runs away as we hear Seo-hyun’s last words to her ‘mother’ of hers: “May all the luck in the world be with you.”
‘JUNG_E’ is now available on Netflix.
