HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ has proven to be a hit with both newcomers and fans of Naughty Dog’s video games, especially since the series has remained faithful to the source material thus far. That success, and the show’s refusal to deviate from the events and characters of the games, apparently left “The Witcher” fans feeling a bit uneasy.
On social media, fans of ‘The Witcher’ have praised ‘The Last of Us’ and HBO and posted memes expressing their dissatisfaction with Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and the creative liberties taken during the series and its spin off.
In recent months, starting in October 2022, Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ has faced an overwhelming backlash from fans of the novels, who constantly criticize the show for introducing entirely new elements to the series and, they say, mischaracterizing certain of central figures such as Yennefer of Vengerberg, or omitting important events such as the meeting of Geralt and Ciri in the forest of Brokilon. The backlash worsened after reports and rumors surfaced shortly after star Henry Cavill announced he was leaving the series after season three.
After the backlash, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has ensured that the upcoming season will stick to the “Time of Contempt” romance. “Obviously we can’t do all the pages, but ‘Time of Contempt’ has given us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, big reveals of a big bad. There is so much going on that we were able to get really close to the books,” she explained.
“The Last of Us” received widespread praise for the two released episodes, with critics describing it as the best video game adaptation ever made. As mentioned, the series has also been praised by fans for sticking to the source material, which includes shots, designs, and jokes taken directly from the 2013 video game itself.
