In Dr. Strange on the World of Madness poster, Benedict Wong returned to AlloCiné during his character Wong’s journey, the significance of the film at MCU, and the production of Sam Rhyme.
In cinemas on May 4, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness transcends the boundaries of Marvel’s cinematic world with the unfamiliar journey of Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), aided by old and new mystical allies, including Wong. AlloCiné spoke with its translator, Benedict Wong, to get back to his character and his evolution at MCU before this film crosses the multi-world, thought-provoking and dangerous realities.
He has been playing Wong in the world of Marvel for six years now, and since his first Doctor Strange movie, Benedict Wong’s character has come a long way. He has also been seen in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: The Last Game, Shan-chi and the Ten Ring Legend, as well as Spider-Man: There is no way home. And above all, he became the magician supreme, the main evolution for a character that the actor did not know before performing his role:
“I just had no idea there was a character in the Marvel universe called Wong. As a kid, I used to collect all of these comics, especially Spider-Man comics. Being in Dr. Strange.
I did not have an agent then and they still managed to find me. I managed to play the role. And one of the first discussions with Kevin Feig and Stephen Brusard was about the original material, the comics, from which they got their inspiration.
In the comics, the character was portrayed as submissive, and that was a trait I did not want Wong to have. Luckily, we realized we had the same intentions towards this character and set up our violins to create this wong, which had developed exponentially into the supremacy of witchcraft.
In addition to the duet with Dr. Strange, Wong will connect with other characters in Dr. Strange in many worlds of madness, such as America Chavez (Kosschitel Gomez), which, according to Benedict Wong, is occupied by the rest of the cast.
“We’re introducing a new character to Marvel’s cinematic world and everything is in the hands of Hochitl Gomez when he was just 14. We looked at him and made sure we had real support. And I think he did a special job. It’s a great start for him! “
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is also an opportunity for Benedict Wong to work with Sam Rhyme, whom he considers a “master” and to whom we owe the Spider-Man trilogy with Toby Maguire. For an actor this is so “A wonderful man who took into account what Scott Derrickson and the team put in the first half and conquered with a masterful hand”.
He was impressed by the director, who returns to the Marvel world twenty years after the Spider-Man trilogy. “Darker Dimension” : “If you are a fan of Sam Rhyme and Marvel movies, you will be delighted”. In any case, Dr. Strange in many worlds of madness will call for a turnaround in MCU Phase IV:
“The Infinity War and Endgame chapters were closing. It was almost like we had to start over. What better way, what happened at WandaVision and No Way Home, than to dismantle these parallel realities now? They can cleverly introduce new characters.
This is a difficult task, even for me. Because you never know what you will get. For me this is a series of surprises, it’s just a bonus. Obviously becoming a magician is supreme, it’s a huge popularity for my character, but let’s see what happens next. Personally, as a fan, it was fun to watch and it was an amazing part of it.
